Interdisciplinary Conference on Advances in Communication and Information Sciences

Since the first communications satellites heralded global communication in the late 1960s, numerous academic disciplines have been challenged by the rapidly changing impacts of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Since 1986, the Interdisciplinary CIS Program at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa has been characterized by a distinguished list of scholars and practitioners focusing on the interdisciplinary study of ICTs in their broader social, political, economic contexts. The pervasiveness of “information” has led to growing interdisciplinary research, with fruitful intersections among many natural and social scientific disciplines, as well as those in business, the arts and humanities, biomedical sciences, and law. This conference, hosted by the Communication and Information Sciences Program, highlights current and emerging research in the Internet technology, management, and policy space. These issues are highly interdisciplinary in nature, requiring a variety of disciplinary and methodological approaches. Example areas include: social networking platforms, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, quantum computing, big data, mobile networks, information and communication technology for development (ICTD), and the ethics of algorithms, to name a few. This conference features some of the most recent research in these complex and dynamic fields from our alumni.
