{"id":466,"date":"2016-05-27T17:39:20","date_gmt":"2016-05-28T03:39:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eli\/?page_id=466"},"modified":"2016-05-27T18:00:47","modified_gmt":"2016-05-28T04:00:47","slug":"responding-to-plagiarism","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eli\/responding-to-plagiarism\/","title":{"rendered":"Responding to Plagiarism"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>Recommended responses to plagiarism in a text<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ELI believes that appropriate responses <u>by faculty and administrators<\/u> who find incidences of plagiarism are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to make sure the student is aware that their text includes plagiarism, where those incidences are, and that plagiarism in a final product is not acceptable; and<\/li>\n<li>to offer to help the student to learn (and then, to the extent time allows, work with them to help them get a few steps further along in understanding the intricacies of academic discourse and developing their own voices as academic writers)<\/li>\n<li>to document (with dates) any steps taken. Save email messages, and make notes about anything that was discussed orally.<\/li>\n<li>ELI instructors: inform the ELI Director of any cases of plagiarized work (initially when you first notice it, and again later, with documentation if necessary, showing how it was resolved).
