{"id":10789,"date":"2022-10-27T16:07:12","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T02:07:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/issmanoa\/?p=10789"},"modified":"2022-10-27T16:07:46","modified_gmt":"2022-10-28T02:07:46","slug":"dhs-designates-ethiopia-for-temporary-protected-status-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/issmanoa\/?p=10789","title":{"rendered":"DHS Designates Ethiopia for Temporary Protected Status in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 21, 2022, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2022\/10\/21\/dhs-designates-ethiopia-temporary-protected-status-18-months\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US Department of Homeland Security announced the designation of Ethiopia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Only individuals who are already residing in the United States as of October 20, 2022 will be eligible for TPS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethiopia\u2019s 18-month designation will go into effect on the publication date of the forthcoming Federal Register notice, which will also include instructions for applying for TPS for those interested.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This announcement will be updated with the date and a link to the Federal Register notice once it has been published.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TPS can be granted when conditions in a country temporarily prevent that country\u2019s nationals from returning safely. Depending on the situation students granted TPS may be granted benefits such as travel authorization or employment authorization.
