{"id":12696,"date":"2023-09-18T15:43:09","date_gmt":"2023-09-19T01:43:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/issmanoa\/?p=12696"},"modified":"2023-09-18T15:56:39","modified_gmt":"2023-09-19T01:56:39","slug":"dhs-extension-of-special-student-relief-ssr-for-sudan-and-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/issmanoa\/?p=12696","title":{"rendered":"DHS Extension of Special Student Relief (SSR) for Sudan and Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Aug. 18, 2023, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) posted Federal Register notices announcing the suspension of certain regulatory requirements for F-1 nonimmigrant students from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2023\/08\/21\/2023-17871\/employment-authorization-for-sudanese-f-1-nonimmigrant-students-experiencing-severe-economic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2023\/08\/21\/2023-17872\/employment-authorization-for-ukrainian-f-1-nonimmigrant-students-experiencing-severe-economic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ukraine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who are experiencing severe economic hardship as a result of the current crisis in Sudan and the current armed conflict in Ukraine. This notice extends Special Student Relief (SSR) for eligible Sudanese and Ukrainian students from Oct. 20, 2023, until April 19, 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These notices temporarily suspend applicable on-campus and off-campus employment regulations for eligible Sudanese and Ukrainian students. DHS will continue to monitor the situation in Sudan and Ukraine and will announce any additional modifications or extensions to these notices in the Federal Register.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These notices apply exclusively to F-1 nonimmigrant students who meet all of the following conditions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are citizens of Sudan or Ukraine regardless of country of birth (or individuals having no nationality who last habitually resided in Syria);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are lawfully present in the United States in an F-1 nonimmigrant status on Aug. 21, 2023;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are enrolled in a Student and Exchange ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵor Program (SEVP)-certified school;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are currently maintaining F-1 nonimmigrant status; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are experiencing severe economic hardship as a direct result of the current crisis in Sudan and the current armed conflict in Ukraine.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The suspension of these requirements will remain in effect until April 19, 2025, for Sudanese and Ukrainian students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please refer to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2023\/08\/21\/2023-17871\/employment-authorization-for-sudanese-f-1-nonimmigrant-students-experiencing-severe-economic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudan Federal Register notice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2023\/08\/21\/2023-17872\/employment-authorization-for-ukrainian-f-1-nonimmigrant-students-experiencing-severe-economic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ukraine Federal Register notice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more information regarding:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The specific SSR action effective with this notice;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is covered by these SSR actions;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why DHS took these SSR actions; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to apply for employment authorization under this SSR action.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For details of this SSR and to apply, students should first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/issmanoa\/\"><b>make an appointment with an ISS advisor<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to determine eligibility and to receive the authorization.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Aug. 18, 2023, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) posted Federal Register notices announcing the suspension of certain [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1,54],"tags":[59],"class_list":["post-12696","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news","category-ssr","tag-ssr"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.1.1 -
