{"id":12705,"date":"2023-09-21T15:52:14","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T01:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/issmanoa\/?p=12705"},"modified":"2023-09-21T15:53:55","modified_gmt":"2023-09-22T01:53:55","slug":"dhs-extends-special-student-relief-employment-benefits-to-afghan-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/issmanoa\/?p=12705","title":{"rendered":"DHS Extends Special Student Relief Employment Benefits to Afghan Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On September 21, 2023,\u00a0 the Department of Homeland Security posted a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/public-inspection\/2023-20789\/employment-authorization-for-afghan-f-1-nonimmigrant-students-experiencing-severe-economic-hardship\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Register<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announcing the suspension of certain regulatory requirements for F-1 nonimmigrant students from Afghanistan who are experiencing severe economic hardship as a result of the current armed conflict and humanitarian crisis. This notice redesignates Special Student Relief (SSR) to include eligible students who are in a lawful F-1 status as of Sept. 25, 2023, and extends relief until May 20, 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This notice temporarily suspends applicable on-campus and off-campus employment regulations for eligible Afghan students. DHS will continue to monitor the situation in Afghanistan and will announce any additional modifications or extensions to this notice in the Federal Register.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This notice applies exclusively to F-1 nonimmigrant students who meet all of the following conditions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are citizens of Afghanistan regardless of country of birth (or individuals having no nationality who last habitually resided in Afghanistan);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are lawfully present in the United States in an F-1 nonimmigrant status on the date of publication of this notice;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are enrolled in a Student and Exchange ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵor Program (SEVP)-certified school;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are currently maintaining F-1 nonimmigrant status; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are experiencing severe economic hardship as a direct result of the current armed conflict and humanitarian crisis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The suspension of these requirements will remain in effect until May 20, 2025, for Afghan students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please refer to the Afghanistan <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/public-inspection\/2023-20789\/employment-authorization-for-afghan-f-1-nonimmigrant-students-experiencing-severe-economic-hardship\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Register<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notice for more information regarding:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The specific SSR action effective with this notice;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is covered by these SSR actions;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why DHS took these SSR actions; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to apply for employment authorization under this SSR action.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For details of this SSR and to apply, students should first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/issmanoa\/\"><b>make an appointment with an ISS advisor<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to determine eligibility and to receive the authorization.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On September 21, 2023,\u00a0 the Department of Homeland Security posted a Federal Register announcing the suspension of certain regulatory requirements [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1,54],"tags":[59],"class_list":["post-12705","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news","category-ssr","tag-ssr"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.1.1 -
