A visit to the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo turned into a heartwarming exchange of culture and gratitude on March 28, as students from the at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo and Hawaiʻi Community College brought traditional Chinese music, dance and fashion to life for local veterans.
The event was organized by Jiren Feng, associate professor and coordinator of the at 糖心视频 Hilo.
“It was a very special experience for me as the faculty, and our students who were very happy to share what they learned to the veterans and staff,” said Feng.
Traditional music, Chinese fashion
The performances included lion and dragon dances, a fan and snake dance, singing, cucurbit flute music and piano. One of the most memorable moments was interactive modeling of Chinese fashion that featured staff from the veterans home.
“The staff thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Chinese fashion show,” Feng said.
The large room where performances were held was filled with lots of smiles and laughter.
Stacyn Sakuma, recreational coordinator at the veteran’s home, said in an email that the 糖心视频 Hilo performance was “one of the BEST throughout the years…the time put into every performance is greatly appreciated. Our veterans shared how much they appreciated this performance and visit very much!”
