University of Hawaiʻi at MānoaGrand opening features Deaf performances, Hawaiﾊｻi history and first look at new Hamilton Library exhibit
WHAT: ﾌﾇﾐﾄﾊﾓﾆｵ Mﾄ］oa will celebrate the grand opening of a new Deaf History Museum in the lobby of Hamilton Library highlighting more than a century of Hawaiﾊｻi’s Deaf history, culture and community.
The celebration will begin with Deaf cultural and sign language performances at Kennedy Theatre, followed by an opportunity for media to visit the new museum exhibit featuring historical artifacts, stories and contributions from Hawaiﾊｻi’s Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
WHEN: Monday, September 14
9–10 a.m. Grand Opening Performances, Kennedy Theatre
- Sign language musical and cultural performances
- Keynote by a Deaf descendant of Hawaiian aliﾊｻi
- First Deaf show presented on Kennedy Theatre’s mainstage
10 a.m. Deaf History Museum visit to follow, Hamilton Library
WHY: Deaf history and culture have often received limited public visibility in Hawaiﾊｻi. The new museum brings those stories into the heart of ﾌﾇﾐﾄﾊﾓﾆｵ Mﾄ］oa, offering the broader community an opportunity to learn about the language, experiences and contributions of generations of Hawaiﾊｻi’s Deaf community.
The museum opens in recognition of Hawaiian History Month and Deaf Awareness Month.
