The University of Hawaiʻi at ����ԴDz�’s is celebrating 10 years of bringing social work, public health and aging together to advance health equity, social justice and community well-being across Hawaiʻi and the Pacific.

Named in 2008 for Native Hawaiian leader Myron B. Thompson, the school united the , , and in 2016, adopting its present name in 2020.

“Each of the units was strong in its own right, but coming together, we’ve seen that they are stronger together than they were apart. Their impact and reach have been magnified,” said Thompson school Dean Alex Ortega. “I see the Thompson school in a much stronger and visible place than it was even three years ago.”

A decade of growth and innovation

Over the past decade, the school has expanded academic opportunities, strengthened workforce development and launched initiatives addressing the needs of Hawaiʻi communities. In the past three years alone, it has hired approximately 20 faculty members across disciplines including environmental health, social and behavioral health and gerontology.

The school has also established workforce development hubs in social work, public health and aging, while expanding access to education through online bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in social work and a master’s degree program in public health.

More milestones

• Workforce development: Expanded paid fieldwork and launched public health pathways via Kauaʻi Community College.
• Community-centered learning: Added courses in trauma-informed care and psychedelic-assisted therapy, alongside the traditional .
• Healthy aging: Launched the Age-Friendly University Initiative and built a campus dementia-friendly garden.
• Overall enrollment growth: Applications to the school have increased over the past several years, with enrollment growing by 46.9%, from 501 students in 2021 – 2022 to 736 students in 2026–2027. This year’s social work cohort is also among the largest in the past five years.

The school’s graduate programs also earned national recognition. In the 2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings, social work ranked No. 51 nationally, while public health ranked No. 89 (tied).

Celebrating 10 years

To mark the milestone, the school hosted its annual dean’s speaker series featuring social work alumnus Jorge Delva, who serves as dean of the Boston University School of Social Work. The talk was followed by a community celebration at Aloha Beer Co. on October 16 with more than 100 students, faculty, staff and community guests in attendance.

Kapiʻolani Community College celebrated eight decades of education, service and community impact at its 80th Anniversary Ruby Jubilee on October 10 at Kapiʻolani CC, bringing together students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners to honor the college’s history and look toward its future.

Held under the theme “E Mau Ana Ka Hoʻoilina ʻo Kapiʻolani—Perpetuated is the Legacy of Queen Kapiʻolani,” the evening traced the college’s story from Queen Kapiʻolani’s legacy of care, courage, service and kuleana to the generations of people who continue to carry that legacy forward.

Emceed by Kapiʻolani CC alumnus, Native Hawaiian storyteller and Emmy Award-winning broadcaster Kamaka Pili, the program reflected on the college’s beginnings, its growth through generations of leaders and educators, the impact of its students and alumni, and the responsibility to perpetuate that legacy for those who follow.

“For 80 years, our college has opened doors to opportunity and helped shape Hawaiʻi’s future. Our graduates serve communities across Oʻahu and the neighbor islands, from vital healthcare professions to our award-winning culinary and hospitality programs, and our alumni carry that impact far beyond campus,” said Chancellor Misaki Takabayashi.

“That legacy is also reflected in strong transfer pathways to four-year ������Ƶ campuses and national distinctions in cybersecurity, undergraduate research, and New Media Arts. As we look ahead, we are focused on helping every student find their direction, navigate their education, and succeed after graduation. The future John Morton Student Welcome Center, a one-stop student services hub and redesigned counseling services carry that commitment forward, while major projects such as Māunulau represent an investment in the generations to come,” she said.

The evening began with a ��ōʻ����� Showcase featuring projects from across the college, followed by dinner prepared by Kapiʻolani CC culinary students under the guidance of chef instructors. The evening also included a silent auction and a performance by Nā Hōkū Hanohano awardee Raiatea Helm.

“I want to express my gratitude to the visionary chancellors, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and so many friends who built this incredible college,” said University of Hawaiʻi President Wendy Hensel. “Congratulations on 80 extraordinary years. We are so proud of what you have built, and we cannot wait to see how high our students will soar over the next 80 years.”

Former Kapiʻolani CC Provost and ������Ƶ Community Colleges Chancellor Emerita Joyce Tsunoda, whose leadership helped guide Kapiʻolani CC’s move to its Diamond Head campus, reflected on the many people who helped turn a shared vision for the college into reality.

“I am most proud that this campus has maintained what I first saw here in the early 1970s. I am equally proud of the many students who have walked through our doors over the years,” said Tsunoda. “Please ensure that the community around this campus continues to be involved in maintaining this learning environment for the people and by the people. This is our Kapiʻolani CC, a vital part of the University of Hawaiʻi System.”

That spirit of community partnership continues today as organizations across Hawaiʻi work alongside Kapiʻolani CC to serve the state’s workforce.

“Kapiʻolani CC listens to the community and responds. The college is deeply connected to Hawaiʻi’s communities and works alongside healthcare partners to shape how we prepare the next generation of nurses and health professionals,” said Hawaiʻi Pacific Health System Chief Nurse Executive Amy Thomas. “Kapiʻolani CC’s nursing graduates are widely regarded across health systems as well-prepared nurses with clinically sound skill sets and a strong nursing foundation to meet the care needs of our patients and communities.”

The Ruby Jubilee honored 80 years of service while reaffirming its commitment to student success, workforce development, community partnership, and educational excellence for generations to come.

The (CLEAR) at the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu is celebrating a major milestone this year: its 50th anniversary. Established in 1976 by state law, CLEAR has spent the last five decades serving as Hawaiʻi‘s CLEARinghouse for labor education—empowering workers, unions and the general public through advocacy, training and maintaining the state’s award-winning labor history archive.

To commemorate this 50th anniversary and honor International Workers Day on May 1, CLEAR has partnered with the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly (������ƵPA), International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 142, International Brotherhood of Electrical Works (IBEW) Local 1186, and the Hawaii Employees Lifeline Program to host a special historical performance.

The one-person play, From Wharf Rats to Lords of the Dock, was written and will be performed by actor Ian Ruskin. The performance chronicles the life and times of Australian immigrant Harry Bridges, exploring his pivotal role in empowering workers through the ILWU.

“For 50 years, CLEAR has proudly served as Hawaiʻi’s CLEARinghouse for labor education,” said Dion Dizon, director of CLEAR. “When we teach labor law and history, we connect then and now to remind workers today that the rights and privileges we enjoy as a matter of law were hard fought and won—not freely given. Education with action is what empowers our unions, our teachers and the working people of our state.”

The community is invited to participate in the May 1 celebration through two events:

• Meet the Artist Gathering: 12–1 p.m. at the ������Ƶ West Oʻahu Library.
• Live Performance: 5 p.m. at IBEW 1186, 1935 Hau Street, Room 306.

The , a beacon of marine education and conservation for over a century, is marking its 122nd anniversary in March. Under the new leadership of Interim Director Judy Lemus, the institution is embarking on a period of revitalization, with innovative exhibits, strategic collaborations, and a continued commitment to the unique aquatic ecosystems of Hawaiʻi and the tropical Pacific.

The aquarium will host a 122nd birthday celebration on March 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day kicks off with a community coastal cleanup followed by a suite of family-friendly activities.

A new chapter

Lemus brings a wealth of experience in marine facility management, research, and education. Lemus served for four years as the interim director of the (HIMB) within the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (SOEST) and is currently the interim associate dean for academic affairs in SOEST. Her primary focus at the aquarium is on operational improvements and enhancing the institutionʻs role in education, marine conservation, collaborative research, and community engagement.

“Managing the Waikīkī Aquarium is about more than just animal husbandry; it’s also about our engagement with the public and contribution to conservation of Pacific species, and our role as a public outlet for ������Ƶ research,” said Lemus. “As we celebrate 122 years, we are not just honoring our history, but building the systems, facilities, and stories that will carry us through the next century.”

One major accomplishment under her leadership has been the successful return of Hōʻailona, the beloved Hawaiian monk seal, to his refurbished enclosure.

New and upcoming exhibits:

• The Aquaculture Tank: In partnership with Biota, a local aquaculture company, this exhibit will feature fish and coral raised entirely in aquaculture facilities at the Oceanic Institute and Waikīkī Aquarium. This “no-collection” model highlights sustainable trade and will also showcase 3-D structures from HIMB researcher Josh Madin’s Lab that facilitate coral growth.
• The Edge of Reef Redesign: Formerly an iconic outdoor exhibit, the Edge of Reef was dismantled to make way for a critical infrastructure project. A redesign is planned for this exhibit with support from ������Ƶ, the ������Ƶ Foundation, and the Friends of the Waikīkī Aquarium.
• New Tank for Mullet and More: The large tank that previously featured mullet, a species revered in Hawaiʻi as a staple food and in loko ʻia (Hawaiian fishpond) aquaculture, is being dismantled to make way for a modern habitat. The new enclosure may house mullet and possibly other compatible species such as rays or sea turtles.
• The aquarium is planning new collaborations with a variety of ������Ƶ faculty and labs to help bring their work to broader audiences.
• AZA Accreditation: The aquarium is starting a Pathway Toward Membership program with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the gold standard in accreditation for zoos and aquariums, with the goal of achieving AZA accreditation for Waikīkī Aquarium in about 5 years.

The (PCATT), a consortium of the University of Hawaiʻi Community Colleges, has made a significant impact on local workforce development, with more than 16,524 students served through more than 1,816 classes since 2020. This demonstrates the center’s crucial role in providing advanced technology training across the region as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Core offerings, including certifications in networking, computer programming, software development, cloud computing, and cyber security, remain strong and continually updated. PCATT is also the sole Hawaiʻi-based sponsor offering a state-verified registered apprenticeship in information technology, providing a vital “earn-while-you-learn” pathway for residents to upskill.

Technology education leader

More than two decades after starting up PCATT remains a leader in providing high-quality, industry-relevant technology education, equipping local professionals with skills for high-demand careers. PCATT also operates a Cisco Networking Academy Support Center and Instructor Training Center for the Central Pacific (including Hawaiʻi, Guam, American Samoa, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Fiji).

PCATT continues to expand into cutting-edge fields, including a new AI for workforce pathway with training in generative AI and machine learning. This forward-looking approach will be highlighted at the PCATT Summit 2026: AI for Action and Impact in June 2026.

Sixty years after welcoming its first class, the University of Hawaiʻi at ����ԴDz�’s (JABSOM) continues to shape the future of health care in Hawaiʻi, training generations of doctors grounded in science, service and aloha.

To mark the milestone, more than 500 students, alumni, faculty, staff and community partners gathered at The Royal Hawaiian on October 11 for the celebration.

Since opening its doors in 1965, JABSOM has trained more than 3,000 doctors. Today, about half of all practicing physicians in Hawaiʻi are JABSOM graduates or faculty members—underscoring the school’s deep connection to the community it serves.

JABSOM Dean Sam Shomaker reflected on the school’s remarkable growth and enduring sense of community.

“When I was a medical student, we had around 60 students in a class. Now we’re up to 77. Twenty–four hundred applicants apply for those 77 spots—so we’re doing something right,” Shomaker said. “This medical school has grown out of the community, and Hawaiʻi is all about aloha. Our medical school is all about aloha.”

Honoring excellence in medicine

The evening included the inaugural JABSOM Distinguished Alumni Awards, recognizing outstanding contributions in medicine and community health. for his groundbreaking cancer and nuclear testing research in the Pacific. for her leadership in reproductive rights and women’s health advocacy.

As Hawaiʻi’s only medical school, JABSOM continues to fulfill its mission to serve the entire state by expanding training opportunities across the islands. New residency programs are being established on the neighbor islands to strengthen local healthcare access.

To capture the spirit of the school, JABSOM’s Media and Communications team debuted , a video series highlighting the people and values that define the institution. Ryan Keliʻi Shontell, Geri Young, Venkataraman Balaraman and Keolamau Yee were featured in short vignettes showcasing JABSOM’s locally focused research, rural education programs and the emphasis on delivering care with aloha.

A celebration of aloha and legacy

The event also included a hula performance by second-year medical students Kaela Akina-Magnussen, Lincoln Hunt, Trini Leung, Aljay Carnate Jr., Karina Sharma, Kasey Emoto and Kalpana Balaraman, who danced to Ke Alaula by the Mākaha Sons.

The evening concluded with a . Shimabukuro is married to Kelly Yamasato, a 2005 JABSOM alumna and current OBGYN faculty member.

“The role of JABSOM is so critical in Hawaiʻi,” ������Ƶ President Wendy Hensel said. “The work they’ve done touches everyone who lives here and reaches far beyond the islands. We’re so proud to be part of JABSOM at ������Ƶ, and I don’t think there are any limits to where they can go next.”

Thousands of patients, from divers stricken with “the bends” to cancer survivors coping with radiation injuries, have found lifesaving care at the University of Hawaiʻi at ����ԴDz� (HTC). On September 27, nearly 100 people gathered at Kuakini Medical Center’s Hale Pulama Mau Auditorium to celebrate HTC’s 40th anniversary and honor its legacy of healing.

HTC, a clinical program of ������Ƶ ����ԴDz�’s (JABSOM) and operated by University Health Partners (������ƵP) of Hawaiʻi, remains the Pacific’s only 24/7 public hyperbaric facility.

The celebration featured guided tours, historical displays, and a clinical information session spotlighting HTC’s evolution and achievements since its opening in 1983. Attendees included physicians, staff, community members and state lawmakers. The center was formally recognized with certificates from both the Hawaiʻi State Legislature and Honolulu City Council for its decades of service to the state.

Since its founding, HTC has treated more than 5,000 patients and is projected to surpass 40,000 individual treatments by the end of 2025. The center delivers hyperbaric oxygen therapy for 15 recognized conditions, including decompression sickness, diabetic ulcers, radiation-related injuries, sudden hearing loss, severe infections, and other non-healing wounds.

Beyond patient care, the Hyperbaric Treatment Center provides hands-on training opportunities for medical students, giving future physicians practical experience in hyperbaric medicine while strengthening care capacity across Hawaiʻi and the Pacific.
