Courtesy of the Francis Haar Collection, University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa Library<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The art exhibit <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.edu\/art\/online-exhibition-francis-haar-disappearing-honolulu\/\">Francis Haar: Disappearing Honolulu<\/a>, featuring works by photographer <strong>Francis Haar<\/strong> and curated by <strong>Gaye Chan<\/strong>, is on display at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.edu\/johnyoung-museum\/\">John Young Museum of Art<\/a> through December 6, 2019. The exhibit features original black-and-white photographs, courtesy of the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Hamilton Collections, that document the changes to Honolulu&#8217;s <span aria-label=\"Aala\">&#699;A&#699;ala<\/span> neighborhood, during the 1960s. Haar taught photography at <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> between 1965 and 1985.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The film and photographs in the exhibition were Francis Haar&#8217;s efforts to document a working class neighborhood that will soon disappear in the name of urban renewal. Many similar efforts are underway on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> currently that warrant attention,&rdquo; said curator and <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa photography professor Gaye Chan.<\/p>\n<p>Haar\u2019s images capture the vibrant street life of <span aria-label=\"Aala\">&#699;A&#699;ala<\/span> as well as the destruction of the area by urban development. The photos that are displayed coincide with Haar\u2019s film, <em><span aria-label=\"Aala\">&#699;A&#699;ala<\/span>&#8212;Life and Death of a Community<\/em>, which is also on view in the art exhibit.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104042\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104042\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-art-haar-3.jpg\" alt=\"gaye chan and alex puou\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-104042\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-art-haar-3.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-art-haar-3-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-art-haar-3-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-104042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gaye Chan and Alex Puou pose in front of Haar\u2019s photograph of Puou&#8217;s grandmother Mary Apiki.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Unifying the past and present<\/h2>\n<p>The exhibit additionally features a map developed by Chan with the help of Natalie Besl, Don Hibbard and Lorraine Minatoishi. This project, titled &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.edu\/art\/francis-haar-then-and-now\/\">Francis Haar: Then and Now<\/a>,&rdquo; shows 18 sites of Haar\u2019s photography and compares them to their present locations. The works, while documenting Honolulu\u2019s transformation, speak to contemporary concerns about gentrification, land use and urban diversity.<\/p>\n<p><em>Disappearing Honolulu<\/em> moved former <span aria-label=\"Aala\">&#699;A&#699;ala<\/span> resident, <strong>Alex Puou<\/strong>, to visit the exhibit and take a stroll down memory lane.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I saw the [info] for the exhibit on Facebook, I believe. I wanted to go to the exhibit because there were photos of my family there,&rdquo; said Puou. &ldquo;I was stoked to see my grandma, my auntie and my uncle. It was interesting to see my family and I tried to look for photos of myself too. I enjoyed the exhibit.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Admission and event information<\/h2>\n<p><em>Disappearing Honolulu<\/em> is free and open to the public.
