The estimated total amount of direct spending by international students at all <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> institutions was $216.9 million, which includes total living expenses and institutional tuition and fees.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The benefits international students contribute to our state go far beyond their direct and indirect spending. Their presence in our schools promotes mutual understanding and global collaboration and is essential to building bridges that connect future world leaders,&rdquo; said <abbr title=\"governor\">Gov.<\/abbr> David Ige. &ldquo;We are able to share <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s culture with the students and they, in turn, teach us about their culture.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Including the ripple effects, <abbr>DBEDT<\/abbr> estimates the total economic impacts of international students are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$446.7 million in economic output generated, including direct, indirect and induced effects<\/li>\n<li>$34.3 million in state taxes generated<\/li>\n<li>$197.3 million in household income generated<\/li>\n<li>4,576 jobs supported by international student spending<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to Mike McCartney, director of <abbr>DBEDT<\/abbr>, &ldquo;International study exchange programs not only contribute to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s economic growth but its continued ability to attract foreign students and investments. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s appeal
