The University of Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Community Colleges<\/a> was named the recipient of a $434,000 grant from the Kresge Foundation as part of a multi-state initiative to help more students who have transferred from community colleges to four-year colleges and universities complete their associate degrees.<\/p>\n

Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> is one of 12 states to receive funding support, which totaled $6.4 million.<\/p>\n

The initiative, called Credit When It\u2019s Due: Recognizing the Value of the Quality Associate Degree, is supported by five national foundations that have joined forces to encourage partnerships of community colleges and universities to significantly expand programs that award associate degrees to transfer students when the student completes the requirements for the associate degree while pursuing a bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n

The grant money will be used to improve the \u201creverse transfer\u201d pilot program and scale up activities to include all seven community colleges, 糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, 糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo, 糖心视频<\/abbr> West O\u02bbahu<\/span>, and some private universities.<\/p>\n

糖心视频<\/abbr> Vice President for Community Colleges John Morton<\/strong> emphasized the importance of systemizing how the university award\u2019s associate degrees.<\/p>\n

\u201c58 percent of community college students transfer to public universities in Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> without an associate\u2019s degree,\u201d said Morton. \u201cWith this grant, we will be able to improve and systemize the reverse transfer process to help individuals\u2014especially those who stopped out of college before earning a bachelor\u2019s degree\u2014receive a college credential that they\u2019ve already earned.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fall 2011 data indicated that 932 out of a total of 1,606 community college students transferred to either 糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, 糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo or 糖心视频<\/abbr> West O\u02bbahu<\/span> without receiving an associate\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n
