Culinary Arts Program Director <strong>Teresa Shurilla<\/strong> sprinted up the stairs to share the news.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We all started shouting about it because it\u2019s huge for our school to be voted number one against all the amazing restaurants that we have here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; Shurilla said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/maui-culinary-leis-server-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Student server with tray\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-111921\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/maui-culinary-leis-server-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/maui-culinary-leis-server-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/maui-culinary-leis-server-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/maui-culinary-leis-server.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s even more amazing is that the cooks and servers are all culinary students. And the restaurant hits the reset button every eight weeks with a new crop of students serving in the front of the house or cooking in the back of the house.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What you get here is an overall vision of what a restaurant is start to finish,&rdquo; Shurilla said. &ldquo;Normally when you are training in industry you won\u2019t get that front and back, and it gives you a great understanding.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Chef instructor <strong>Tom Lelli<\/strong> added, &ldquo;They have a high standard that they can shoot for and be proud of. When they go out in industry, they know what it takes.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Students agree the hands-on class is setting them up well for their culinary futures.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I want to own my own restaurant, so that\u2019s why a class like this is super exciting because I\u2019m getting the experience in the front of the house and the back of the house as well,&rdquo; said <strong>Mikel Espinosa Reyes<\/strong>, a second-year culinary student.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_111925\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111925\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/maui-culinary-leis-students-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"culinary students\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-111925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/maui-culinary-leis-students-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/maui-culinary-leis-students-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/maui-culinary-leis-students-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/maui-culinary-leis-students.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mikel Espinosa Reyes and Mary Joy Dela Cruz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Culinary student <strong>Mary Joy Dela Cruz<\/strong> said, &ldquo;Cooking was my passion from when I was a kid, and I&#8217;ve been wanting to experience making different types of food.&rdquo; What she got at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> Maui College was much more. &ldquo;By taking this class, I went out of my comfort zone. I learned different things like how to serve the people, how to present food in front of them.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The former Class Act restaurant has been the recipient of multiple awards throughout its 20-plus-year history. The Leis family helped take it to the next level with a $1-million gift in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Dining room instructor <strong>Mark Malone<\/strong> said, &ldquo;There is a backyard on Maui. There is a backyard on the island of hotels, of restaurants, of fine dining, breweries, wineries and all those things, and I just don&#8217;t think that people realize that it\u2019s sort of a hidden gem.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>With all of its accolades, The Leis Family Class Act Restaurant won\u2019t remain hidden much longer.<\/p>\n<p>Note: The Leis Family Class Act Restaurant offers a 3-course prix fixe menu with an a la carte dessert on Wednesdays and Fridays, 11:00 a.m.&#8211;12:30 p.m. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opentable.com\/\">Reservations may be made through OpenTable.com<\/a>. Malone advises getting on a wait list, since the restaurant is often fully booked within hours after reservations open each semester.<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-video-wrap-post\"><figure
