Photo credit: Ryan Tabata.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sulfur dioxide and other gases released from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Hawai&#699;i\u2019s<\/span> volcanoes react in the atmosphere to produce volcanic smog, known locally as &ldquo;vog.&rdquo; During episodes of increased volcanic gas emission and stagnant atmospheric conditions, the vog concentration can produce significant impacts on community health and create a visibility hazard for general aviation. Vog has been shown to exacerbate symptoms of asthma, sinusitis and respiratory disease.<\/p>\n<p>How vog affects human health is the topic of research by the <a href=\"http:\/\/weather.hawaii.edu\/vmap\/\">Vog Measurement and Prediction<\/a> (<abbr>VMAP<\/abbr>) project, led by University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa atmospheric scientists.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>VMAP<\/abbr> project received three years of new funding totaling $421,907 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (<abbr>FEMA<\/abbr>) to improve its ability to provide statewide forecasts of vog, and to expand delivery methods to include push notification to smartphones.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123710\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123710\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/manoa-soest-vog-funding-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"kilauea erupting\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-123710\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/manoa-soest-vog-funding-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/manoa-soest-vog-funding-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/manoa-soest-vog-funding.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123710\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">July 2018 K&#299;lauea east rift zone eruption. Photo credit: Ryan Tabata.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The goal of the <abbr>VMAP<\/abbr> project is to mitigate the hazards associated with the emissions from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Hawai&#699;i\u2019s<\/span> volcanoes to communities across the state through improved monitoring of volcanic emissions and the development and rapid dissemination of an accurate forecast of vog dispersion to the public,&rdquo; said <strong>Steven Businger<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/atmo\/\">atmospheric sciences<\/a> professor in <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>) and co-lead of the project.<\/p>\n<p>Businger and co-lead Lacey Holland, a <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> researcher, are collaborating with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Civil Defense, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Department of Health, U.S. Geological Survey, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and National Park Service on this effort.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Since 2010, the <abbr>VMAP<\/abbr> program has been the only source of information regarding the concentration of vog emissions from K&#299;lauea affecting the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Hawai&#699;i,<\/span>&rdquo; said Businger. &ldquo;Historically, K&#299;lauea erupts every 2.5 years and Mauna Loa erupts every 7.5 years. Thus, it is likely that there will be a new eruption of Mauna Loa and\/or K&#299;lauea within the next 5 years. This <abbr>FEMA<\/abbr> award will ensure we are ready when that happens.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>For more see <a
