White\/STScI)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A team of astronomers at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifa.hawaii.edu\/\">Institute for Astronomy<\/a> (<abbr>IfA<\/abbr>) has produced the world\u2019s largest three-dimensional astronomical imaging catalog of stars, galaxies and quasars. The team used data from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\u2019s\">糖心视频\u2019s<\/abbr> Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System or Pan-<abbr>STARRS<\/abbr>1 (<abbr>PS1<\/abbr>) on Haleakal&#257;. The <abbr>PS1<\/abbr> 3&#960; survey is the world\u2019s largest deep multi-color optical survey, spanning three-quarters of the sky. <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> astronomers applied novel computational tools to the catalog, to decipher which of the 3 billion objects are stars, galaxies or quasars. For the galaxies, the software also derived estimates of their distances.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting <abbr title=\"three-dimensional\">3D<\/abbr> catalog was made possible through a National Science Foundation award and is now available as a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.stsci.edu\/hlsp\/ps1-strm\">high-level science product through the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes<\/a>. It is approximately 300 <abbr title=\"gigabyte\">GB<\/abbr> in size, and science users can query the catalog through the <abbr>MAST<\/abbr> CasJobs <abbr>SQL<\/abbr> interface, or download the entire collection as a computer-readable table.<\/p>\n<h2>Creating a <abbr>3D<\/abbr> catalog<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_128433\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-128433\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/map-ifa-universe-map-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-128433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/map-ifa-universe-map-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/map-ifa-universe-map-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/map-ifa-universe-map.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-128433\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Map of density of the universe, for galaxies between 1.5 and 3 billion light years away.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Astronomers took publicly-available spectroscopic measurements that provide definitive object classifications and distances, and fed them to an artificial intelligence algorithm. The <abbr title=\"artificial intelligence\">AI<\/abbr> process was key in helping the team figure out how to accurately determine the same properties from various measures of the colors and sizes of the objects. This <abbr>AI<\/abbr> or Machine Learning approach with a &ldquo;feedforward neural network&rdquo; achieved an overall classification accuracy of 98.1&#37; for galaxies, 97.8&#37; for stars and 96.6&#37; for quasars. Galaxy distance estimates are accurate to almost 3&#37;.<\/p>\n<p>Lead study author <strong>Robert Beck<\/strong>, a former cosmology postdoctoral fellow at <abbr>IfA<\/abbr>, described the process. &ldquo;Utilizing a state-of-the-art optimization algorithm, we leveraged the spectroscopic training set of almost 4 million light sources to teach the neural network to predict source types and galaxy distances, while at the same time correcting for light extinction by dust in the Milky Way.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the largest map of the universe was created by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdss.org\">Sloan Digital Sky Survey<\/a> (<abbr>SDSS<\/abbr>), which covers only one-third of the sky. The new catalog doubles the area surveyed, has greater statistics and contains specific areas the <abbr>SDSS<\/abbr> missed.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>IfA<\/abbr> astronomer and co-author on the study, <strong>Istv&#225;n Szapudi<\/strong>, noted that &ldquo;already, a preliminary version of this catalog, covering a much smaller area, facilitated the discovery of the largest void in the universe, the possible cause of the Cold Spot. The new, more accurate, and larger photometric redshift catalog will be the starting point for many future discoveries.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This beautiful map of the universe provides one example of how the power of the Pan-<abbr>STARRS<\/abbr> big data set can be multiplied with artificial intelligence techniques and complementary observations,&rdquo; explained Pan-<abbr>STARRS<\/abbr> Director and <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> Associate Astronomer, <strong>Ken Chambers<\/strong>. &ldquo;As Pan-<abbr>STARRS<\/abbr> collects more and more data, we will use machine learning to extract even more
