It was there that my father met my mother&#8230;I wasn\u2019t raised much around the Hawaiian culture.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>According to family, Kekahuna\u2019s grandfather was a fluent <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> speaker. Her grandmother, also Hawaiian, was born on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and raised in <span aria-label=\"Nuuanu,\">Nu&#699;uanu,<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> (where she still resides in good health at 88 years old). Kekahuna remembers hearing Hawaiian words here and there, during their brief encounters.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from high school, she enrolled as a history major at community college in Palm Desert. (Courtesy photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kekahuna moved to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> in 2017 to attend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\">Honolulu Community College<\/a>, and participated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huliauapaa.org\/wkip.html\">Wahi Kupuna Internship Program<\/a>. The program, supported with funding from Kamehameha Schools, is open to undergraduate students in any of the 10 <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> campuses enrolled in anthropology, archaeology, Hawaiian studies or a related field. During the program, interns engage in place- and community-based cultural resource management projects on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> or <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island (where Kekahuna interned).<\/p>\n<p>Through Wahi Kupuna, Kekahuna &ldquo;started to learn so much, including some knowledge that was lost and I was able to regain again.&rdquo; She added, &ldquo;I\u2019m now teaching things to my own family, my father and niece, and strengthening family ties through knowledge.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Thriving Vulcan<\/h2>\n<p>After earning her associate\u2019s degree from Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>, she enrolled at <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo in the fall of 2019 and has been a thriving Vulcan ever since.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The university resides on Native Hawaiian land, and that\u2019s how it gave me the tools to connect me to the right people, the right programs and the right classes,&rdquo; said Kekahuna. &ldquo;The university helped ground me, immersing myself into the community and its culture.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>She recently wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/historichawaii.org\/2020\/08\/20\/miloliifishingvillage\/\">a blog post for the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Historic Foundation<\/a> highlighting her anthropological field research. The budding researcher describes a serendipitous moment that led her to find a single box of fishing artifacts in the anthropology department\u2019s collections room. These possessions came from the only remaining fishing village in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Hawai&#699;i,<\/span> a place called <span aria-label=\"Milolii\">Miloli&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Kekahuna writes, &ldquo;It was wonderful because prior to this finding, I was intent on building my connections with <span aria-label=\"Milolii\">Miloli&#699;i<\/span> and the community I come from. I was getting to know the place my T&#363;t&#363; Kilikina was from and it became of personal importance to take on this project.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>She believes that this project was just the beginning&#8212;a stepping stone on the way to her future goal of becoming a secondary school teacher.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As a Hawaiian, I feel like it\u2019s expected of me to be here, to teach, to participate in anthropology. I should know that connection to the <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span>,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;The anthropology department has led me to finding out my identity and what it\u2019s
