Yet, the efficacy of these microbial-mediated processes is governed by the availability of dissolved oxygen in water. Generally, oxygen has poor solubility in water, which has a negative effect on fish growth and plant yields. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/manoa-ctahr-aquaculture-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/manoa-ctahr-aquaculture.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-134774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/manoa-ctahr-aquaculture-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/manoa-ctahr-aquaculture-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/manoa-ctahr-aquaculture.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Almost $200,000 in new funding from the <abbr>USDA<\/abbr>-National Institute of Food and Agriculture\u2019s (<abbr title=\"National Institute of Food and Agriculture\">NIFA<\/abbr>) Water Quantity and Quality Program may expand researchers&#8217; understanding of how nanobubbles could improve aeration and oxygen supplies. Under the grant, <strong>Samir Khanal<\/strong> of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (<abbr title=\"College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources\">CTAHR<\/abbr> ) <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/mbbe\/\">Department of Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering<\/a>, will apply the technology to these aqueous systems. His goal is to uncover new opportunities for improving fish and plant yields\u2014with concomitant improvements in water quality. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There is a pressing need to develop an alternative to the current highly energy-intensive conventional aeration,&rdquo; said Khanal. &ldquo;Nanobubble technology has a potential to revolutionize aquaculture and aquaponic systems, with higher productivity and resource recovery.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Khanal was initially awarded <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>\u2019s Team Science grant, which was critically important to obtaining preliminary data for his grant proposal to <abbr>NIFA<\/abbr>. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Thanks to the <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> and <abbr>NIFA<\/abbr> grants, we hope our findings will benefit existing <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> businesses, as well as a new generation of growers, across the state and beyond,&rdquo; Khanal added. <\/p>\n<p><a
