Quick, digestible lessons in Hawaiian language are being offered through the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/khuok-college-of-hawaiian-language-undergrad#:~:text=糖心视频%20Hilo%27s%20College%20of%20Hawaiian%20Language%2C%20Ka%20Haka,her%20strong%20advocacy%20of%20Hawaiian%20language%20and%20culture.\">Ka Haka <span aria-label=\"Ula\">&#699;Ula<\/span> O <span aria-label=\"Keelikolani\">Ke&#699;elik&#333;lani<\/span>, College of Hawaiian Language<\/a> (<abbr>KH<\/abbr>&#699;<abbr>UOK<\/abbr>)<\/p>\n<p>In celebration of <span aria-label=\"Olelo\">&#699;&#332;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Month (Hawaiian Language Month), <em>Hua Maka<\/em> launched  February 8, on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olelo.hawaii.edu\/khuok\/hk.php\">Hale <span aria-label=\"Kuamoo\">Kuamo&#699;o<\/span> &#8211; Hawaiian Language Center<\/a>\u2019s Instagram account (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/halekuamoo\/\">@halekuamoo<\/a>) and <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s social media platforms (@uhhilo on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/uhhilo\">Facebook<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/uhhilo\/\">Instagram<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/糖心视频Hilo\">Twitter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCbbkrwOZDbQunvU2ZBfKXTw\">YouTube<\/a>). Plans are also underway to broadcast the audio portion on University Radio Hilo, <abbr>K糖心视频H 101 FM<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>Written and filmed by <abbr>KH<\/abbr>&#699;<abbr>UOK<\/abbr> students, each video focuses on a single word with examples of usage, spoken entirely in Hawaiian. English captions are included for those who are not fluent or familiar with the language.<\/p>\n<p>Lecturer and Curriculum Specialist <strong>Kamalani Johnson<\/strong> named the program <em>Hua Maka<\/em>, referring to <span aria-label=\"huaolelo\">hua&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> (Hawaiian words) that will serve as points of origin for people to hear, speak and use <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> on campus, encompassing &ldquo;hua&rdquo; of &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"huaolelo\">hua&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span>&rdquo; (words) and &ldquo;maka&rdquo; of &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"hoomaka\">ho&#699;omaka<\/span>&rdquo; (start up).<\/p>\n<h2>Entry point<\/h2>\n<p>&ldquo;It is my hope that <em>Hua Maka<\/em> serves as an entry point for our university community to learn <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8212;both Hawaiian place names and Hawaiian words relevant to our place\u2014so that we do our part in perpetuating <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson also led students from Associate Professor <strong>Jason Cabral<\/strong>\u2019s third-level Hawaiian class in both word descriptions and video filming. Videos are edited by student videographer\/photographer <strong>Kapuakea Isaak<\/strong> of the Office of University Relations.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>KH<\/abbr>&#699;<abbr>UOK<\/abbr> Director <strong>Keiki <span aria-label=\"Kawaiaea\">Kawai&#699;ae&#699;a<\/span><\/strong> said, &ldquo;It is my hope that by increasing venues where Hawaiian language can be easily accessed in useful and relevant ways, that we as a university community also serve as better stewards of our language through continued <span aria-label=\"ao\">a&#699;o<\/span>&#8212;teaching and learning&#8212;of our precious Hawaiian language.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><em>Hua Maka<\/em> is one of the first <abbr>KH<\/abbr>&#699;<abbr>UOK<\/abbr> student-led initiatives to perpetuate <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> using digital media.<\/p>\n<h2>Revitalizing Hawaiian<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Kolokea <span aria-label=\"Kauaula\">Kaua&#699;ula<\/span><\/strong>, a student of Cabral\u2019s, shares her perspective of <em>Hua Maka<\/em> (<span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> translation provided by Johnson):<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Nou,\">No&#699;u,<\/span> he <span aria-label=\"koikoi\">ko&#699;iko&#699;i<\/span> <span aria-label=\"io\">&#699;i&#699;o<\/span> n&#333; ka noke mau <span aria-label=\"ana\">&#699;ana<\/span> i k&#257; k&#257;kou <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> ma n&#257; <span aria-label=\"ano\">&#699;ano<\/span> hana like <span aria-label=\"ole\">&#699;ole<\/span> i loko n&#333; o ko k&#257;kou ola. <span aria-label=\"O\">&#699;O<\/span> k&#275;ia papahana <em>Hua Maka<\/em>, <span aria-label=\"o\">&#699;o<\/span> ia kekahi o n&#257; mea a k&#257;kou e hana nei i mea e &#333; mau ai ka <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. It\u2019s a project that familiarizes people with Hilo in a fun and innovative way. I believe the place names, storied places and our chiefs of Hilo will live on through this project for the benefit of the community.&rdquo;)<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the <em>Hua Maka<\/em> program, the
