(Photo credit: Gates Coral Lab)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A doctoral candidate in the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/mbiograd.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Marine Biology Graduate Program<\/a>, studying a potential coral-saving strategy, was <a href=\"https:\/\/conbio.org\/publications\/scb-news-blog\/introducing-the-2021-david-h.-smith-conservation-research-fellows\">named<\/a> a recipient of the 2021 David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship by the Society for Conservation Biology and the Cedar Tree Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shayle Matsuda<\/strong> will be part of a team of researchers engaging in an international coral reef restoration project. (Photo credit: Gates Coral Lab)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;By studying patterns of microbial dysbiosis, the breakdown of the microbiome-host relationship, in multiple key coral species in both <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and Florida, we will better understand the risks of implementing large-scale coral translocation as a conservation strategy,&rdquo; said Matsuda.<\/p>\n<h2>Prepared for the future<\/h2>\n<p>Working with <strong>Craig Nelson<\/strong>, an associate researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hahana.soest.hawaii.edu\/cmoreserver\/\">Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/gatescorallab.com\/\">Gates Coral Lab<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a>, Matsuda has focused his graduate research on the effects of ocean warming on coral-microbial symbioses and coral physiology. With fellowships from <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant<\/a>, Point Foundation, and Denise B. Evans Fellow plus direct support from Pam Omidyar and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, he has studied coral bleaching and recovery in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, examining how thermal stress impacts microbial and algal symbioses.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Shayle\u2019s doctoral work here at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> M&#257;noa has broken new ground in understanding how rising ocean temperatures will affect the symbioses between coral, algae and bacteria as coral reef bleaching increases worldwide,&rdquo; said Nelson. &ldquo;He has pioneered new molecular techniques to study these symbioses throughout the coral lifecycle.
