The National Science Foundation (NSF<\/abbr>) has awarded a $2.4 million grant to the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> Maui College<\/a> for a project called, “ʻĀINA<\/span> IS: A<\/u>dvancing I<\/u>nformal N<\/u>ative ʻĀ<\/u>ina<\/span>-based I<\/u>nspirations in S<\/u>TEM<\/abbr>.” The new project expands the work of Project STEM<\/abbr>ulate<\/a> in partnership with community-based organizations. Project STEM<\/abbr>ulate is a STEM<\/abbr> (science, engineering, mathematics and technology) problem-based learning curriculum implemented at Upward Bound<\/a> sites for underrepresented and low-income high school students.<\/code><\/p>\n

Beginning in September and continuing over the next four years, six ʻāina<\/span>-based community organizations—three on Maui and three on Oʻahu<\/span>—will design the STEM<\/abbr> problem-based learning process to incorporate a Native Hawaiian cultural lens. These ʻāina<\/span>-based community organizations will then host Native Hawaiian youth (12 years and older) and their families in the STEM<\/abbr> problem-based learning process to work on solution pathways to local environmental problems.<\/p>\n
