This stone desert endemic insect, found only on this volcano, survives among some of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s most iconic native flora and fauna.<\/p>\n<p>To improve conservation and management efforts for these and other high-elevation invertebrates, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> graduate student researcher <strong>Brad Reil<\/strong> and advisor <strong>Dan Rubinoff<\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> (CTAHR) have traded in their T-shirts for winter wear to conduct in-depth field work in the alpine stone desert and subalpine m\u0101mane woodlands on Maunakea. Since 2018, they\u2019ve collected w\u0113kiu bug and other arthropod specimens to learn about the arthropods\u2019 habits and dietary requirements, effects of introduced species and available resources between the alpine and subalpine habitats. The research duo is on a mission to map the food web connecting the mountain\u2019s species.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146827\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146827\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-ctahr-wekiu-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people collecting specimens\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-146827\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-ctahr-wekiu-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-ctahr-wekiu-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-ctahr-wekiu-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146827\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Specimen collection in progress on the summit at an elevation of 13,796 feet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Maunakea is a special place for many reasons,&rdquo; Reil explained. &ldquo;Ecologically, the endemic species that call the mountain home are found nowhere else on earth and have adapted to the harsh dry cold conditions on the volcano. At the summit, the aeolian stone desert ecosystem obtains much of its resources from wind-borne materials (bits of plants, dead insects, dust, etc.) instead of plant species, resulting in uniquely adapted inhabitant species such as the w&#275;kiu bug.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/07\/08\/uau-observed-on-maunakea\/\">First endangered <span aria-label=\"uau\">&#699;ua&#699;u<\/span> observed on Maunakea in more than 60 years<\/a>, July 8, 2021<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The multi-year study funded by the <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo Center for Maunakea Stewardship (previously the Office of Maunakea Management) is nearly complete. Reil, who works in CTAHR\u2019s Insect Systematics and Biodiversity Lab, will soon switch from the specimen collection phase to processing and analyzing results before writing final reports.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This research is exciting because it will provide information about the underlying interactions between the arthropod species that support these diverse habitats, and will help to ensure we have the knowledge necessary to properly manage and conserve them,&rdquo; added Reil.<\/p>\n<p>This effort\/work\/program\/research\/outreach\/event is an example of
