This project aims to overcome this barrier by developing methods and tools that remove the short-day flowering requirement from any tropical maize line, allowing it to be incorporated into any maize breeding program.<\/p>\n<p>The project, &ldquo;Genome Engineering to Sustain Crop Improvement (<abbr>GETSCI<\/abbr>),&rdquo; is led by <strong>Michael Muszynski<\/strong>, assistant professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/ctahr\/tpss\/\">Department of Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This collaboration leverages strengths in tropical plant biology and transformation (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>) with expertise in maize transformation, genome engineering, and crop breeding (Iowa) so we can develop and apply improved tools to suppress the late flower behavior of high yielding tropical maize inbreds, allowing them to be used immediately in any maize breeding program, worldwide,&rdquo; said Muszynski. &ldquo;This type of work is not possible within a single institution, and so I am grateful and excited <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> <abbr>EPSCoR<\/abbr> is investing in building research capacity at both institutions so we can develop tools to help crop breeders sustainably feed 8 billion people.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Addressing food security<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_148149\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-148149\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-ctahr-nsf-epscor-grant-feature-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"corn field\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-148149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-ctahr-nsf-epscor-grant-feature-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-ctahr-nsf-epscor-grant-feature-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-ctahr-nsf-epscor-grant-feature.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-148149\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maize nursery in Waim\u0101nalo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Collaborators for the four-year public impact research project include Assistant Researcher <strong>Teresita Amore<\/strong>, Assistant Professor <strong>Zhi-Yan (Rock) Du<\/strong> and Professor <strong>Amy Hubbard<\/strong> at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. Partners from Iowa State University are Professors Kan Wang and Jianming Yu.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Expected impacts from this project will help address food and economic security in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, by supporting development of new tropical crop breeding industries. In Iowa, access to gene-edited, temperate-adapted tropical germplasm will move breeding of improved corn varieties into the next era,&rdquo; said Wang. &ldquo;This project also supports an exchange of knowledge and talent among students at our respective universities that sets the stage for continuing, important collaboration.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This research is an example of <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s goal of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf#page=25\">Excellence in Research: Advancing the Research and Creative Work Enterprise<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), one of four goals identified in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf\">2015&#8211;25 Strategic Plan<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), updated in December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Workforce capacity will also be increased by engaging underrepresented students, particularly Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, in diverse aspects of genome engineering research, by the exchange of undergraduates between partner institutions, and by creating opportunities for improved science communication skills through training sessions, workshops, and engagement with the community.<\/p>\n<h2>Project dedication<\/h2>\n<p>Muszynski initially developed the idea for the <abbr>GETSCI<\/abbr> project in collaboration with his longtime friend and colleague Nick Lauter, a U.S. Department of Agriculture (<abbr>USDA<\/abbr>) research geneticist and faculty affiliate in the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology. Lauter was the <abbr>USDA<\/abbr> lead for the <abbr>GETSCI<\/abbr> collaboration when he passed away unexpectedly at age 48, two weeks prior to the submission of the project proposal.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Through this project, the <abbr>GETSCI<\/abbr> team hopes to honor Nick Lauter\u2019s memory, his collaborative spirit and his many contributions to maize genetic
