Burns School of Medicine\">JABSOM<\/abbr>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, a prime tourism destination, in combination with its largely multi-racial resident population, presents a unique opportunity to identify and chart the distribution of SARS-CoV-2 variants, the virus that causes the coronavirus disease. The National Institutes of Health has committed $779,792 for two years to the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) toward advancing public impact research on the spread and continuing evolution of SARS-CoV-2 variants in the state\u2019s underserved communities. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We want to further understand why certain variants are so much more transmissible than others.<br \/>&#8212;Vivek R. Nerurkar<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The study, &ldquo;Surveillance of <abbr>SARS-CoV-2<\/abbr> Variants in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; is part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/inbre.jabsom.hawaii.edu\/?page_id=11\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> IDeA Networks for Biomedical Research Excellence (<abbr>INBRE<\/abbr>) program<\/a>. It is based on the prediction that additional variants will be found in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> because of its high influx of recreational travelers from COVID-19 hotspots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vivek R. Nerurkar<\/strong>, professor and chair of <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/tropicalmedicine\/\">Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology &#38; Pharmacology<\/a>, leads a team of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and bioinformaticians, including the <abbr>INBRE<\/abbr> Bioinformatics Core group, in sequencing and analyzing the genetic information of these variants circulating throughout the state. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We want to further understand why certain variants are so much more transmissible than others,&rdquo; said Nerurkar, who has spearheaded COVID-19 diagnostic testing among the underserved and vulnerable populations in the state.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/12\/04\/uh-lab-provides-covid19-tests\/\">New <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> lab provides free rapid result COVID-19 testing to underserved<\/a>, December 4, 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The project represents a collaboration with four Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments-certified laboratories in Honolulu that perform <abbr>FDA<\/abbr> Emergency Use Authorization COVID-19 diagnostic tests. In addition, the study is providing a unique opportunity for participation by undergraduates in the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>INBRE<\/abbr> student research program.<\/p>\n<h2>Algorithm to predict mutations<\/h2>\n<p>The research group\u2019s work preceding this grant was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/article\/rs-378702\/v3\"><em>Research Square<\/em><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33718878\/\"><em><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Journal of Health and Social Welfare<\/em><\/a> and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2021.08.18.455536v1\"><em>bioRxiv<\/em><\/a>, where they present an algorithm developed to predict particular mutations that can lead to more transmissible COVID-19 variants. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We developed this model hoping we can contribute to the new generation vaccines so that there is no delay in preparing the new vaccines when variants arrive,&rdquo; Nerurkar said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The work by Dr. Nerurkar and his team will ensure that <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is out in front of any new variants of concern either entering the state or arising here on the islands, as part of a national effort to track and quickly respond to the entry and movement of coronavirus variants across the states,&rdquo; said Principal Investigator and Director of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>
