More experts are recognizing that creating solutions that integrate multiple ways of knowing is essential to a sustainable future in Hawaiʻi<\/span> and around the world. The University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI<\/abbr>) will spotlight that collaborative pathway at A 糖心视频<\/abbr> Innovation Virtual Conference<\/a> November 15–17. The virtual conference is free and open to the first 1,000 participants. Register online<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the second session, \u201cʻĀina<\/span> Momona: Cultivating a Thriving Hawaiʻi,\u201d<\/span> on November 16, 8–10 a.m., a live panel will discuss innovative solutions, rooted in Indigenous knowledge, that can lead to thriving communities in the next century. The panel includes Indigenous and non-Indigenous experts in natural and social sciences whose work includes kuleana (responsibility, privilege) from mauka (inland) to makai (ocean).<\/p>\n

“As we face complex 21st century challenges that are largely a result of exploitive practices of the last 200 years, resulting in climate change, over-use of resources and social disparities, Indigenous social-ecological solutions and ways of knowing are critical to addressing these challenges, recognizing that humans and nature will either decline together or thrive together,” said Melissa Price<\/strong>, panel moderator and an assistant professor in 糖心视频<\/abbr> Mānoa\u2019s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Other featured speakers joining the panel conversation include: Kapua Kawelo, natural resource manager, U.S. Army Garrison; Christopher Sabine<\/strong>, associate dean for research in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>; Mehana Vaughan<\/strong>, an associate professor in Natural Resources and Environmental Management; Rosie Alegado<\/strong>, associate professor of oceanography and the Sea Grant College Program<\/a>; and Sharon Ziegler-Chong<\/strong>, director of research and community partnerships at 糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo.<\/p>\n

“These are panelists who inspire me with their enthusiasm, vision and tireless efforts to restore momona (abundance) across land and sea-scapes, and the communities who care for them,” said Price. “This is a great opportunity for a front row seat to hear the ways in which we can join them in building a hopeful future.”<\/p>\n
