{"id":15811,"date":"2013-04-11T10:17:54","date_gmt":"2013-04-11T20:17:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=15811"},"modified":"2021-11-26T12:50:20","modified_gmt":"2021-11-26T22:50:20","slug":"space-is-the-next-frontier-for-uh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/04\/11\/space-is-the-next-frontier-for-uh\/","title":{"rendered":"Space is the next frontier for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RbLMo8eB1iI?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Thanks to the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is on the verge of becoming a major player in the space industry. <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> is leading the way in a historic effort, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/04\/10\/uh-plays-a-vital-role-in-hawaiis-first-space-launch\/\">the first ever space launch from the 50th state<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This means a lot for the university and it means a lot for the state because what we are trying to do is we are trying to attract folks that will build small satellites for the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; said Luke Flynn, the director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/hsfl.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Space Flight Laboratory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The upside is as vast as space itself.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If we can continue to launch and create the opportunity for a new business here, it could be a new economic sector here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; said University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> President M.R.C. Greenwood.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Part of the ultimate goal is to create a space base industry here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and have high tech jobs for people,&rdquo; said Georgeanne Friend, a <a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> instructor.<\/p>\n<p>The satellite that will be deployed in the inaugural launch is being designed and constructed on the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/a> campus by students, recent graduates and researchers.<\/p>\n<p>It is all part of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Space Flight Laboratory, or <abbr>HSFL<\/abbr>, a multidisciplinary research and education center within the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is really interesting for all the students to really be able to see what they learned in college being actually put into application,&rdquo; said Jeremy Chan, the <abbr title=\"Hawaii Space Flight Laboratory\">HSFL<\/abbr> project manager. &ldquo;Suddenly, all the theory becomes reality.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"Hawaii Space Flight Laboratory\">HSFL<\/abbr> team is developing, testing and building rocket launcher systems, spacecraft avionics, mission operations software, scientific instruments: every aspect of an unmanned spacecraft and mission, except for the rocket and rocket motors. The launch will take place at Pacific Missile Range Facility on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to begin launching small satellites on a regular basis attracting companies looking for an affordable way to test their space technology. The university helps hold down the cost by playing a key role in the research and development of that technology, which also gives <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> students invaluable experience.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s actually a win, win, win in all situations,&rdquo; said Flynn. &ldquo;For the university, for the country, for the state and also for the corporations that are willing to invest.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>It is also a true systemwide effort at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr>. One of the satellite payloads is being built by students at <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a>, which will also operate a receiving station during the mission.
