Restoration increases a beach\u2019s ability to mitigate storm damage and flooding from severe storms, and naturally allows beaches to adjust to short-term sea-level rise while remaining an important part of nearshore ecosystems.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_161290\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-161290\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-sea-grant-beach-restoration-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-sea-grant-beach-restoration-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"beach aerial shot comparison\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-161290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-sea-grant-beach-restoration-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-sea-grant-beach-restoration-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-sea-grant-beach-restoration-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-161290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: <abbr>DLNR<\/abbr>\/<abbr>WBSIDA<\/abbr>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Dolan Eversole<\/strong>, the Waik&#299;k&#299; Beach management coordinator at the <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant College Program<\/a> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">(Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant) who provided coordination, outreach and technical support for the project, described the long-term adaptation strategy for the region.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In the longer-term, planning for resilience for Waik&#299;k&#299; includes considering a lot of different variables including projections for sea-level rise, beach erosion, flooding and anticipated beach and coastal land use priorities,&rdquo; Eversole said. &ldquo;It is important we view the marine ecosystem, the coral reefs and beaches as a natural buffer to coastal hazards that require protection and regular maintenance just like other man-made protections.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/25\/waikiki-beach-renewal-recovery\/\"><abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Sea Grant provides critical support in Waik&#299;k&#299; Beach renewal, recovery<\/a>, August 25, 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Waik&#299;k&#299; restoration project was completed in May 2021 and carried out along the shoreline of Mamala Bay, locally known as the Royal Hawaiian Beach, on the south shore of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. It involved the placement of 21,700 cubic yards of sand which was &ldquo;recycled&rdquo; from a nearshore sand source located offshore Waik&#299;k&#299;.
