Researchers said the findings could provide a foundation for communication strategies for other health policies beyond the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Until last fall, <abbr>NHPIs<\/abbr> remained significantly under-vaccinated compared to ethnic groups in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. A team of University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa researchers surveyed <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> residents between March and August 2021 and their findings, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/vaccines10060968\">published in <em>Vaccines<\/em><\/a> in June 2022, describes how racial\/ethnic differences in trust between sources of COVID-19 information, coupled with the level of consumption of such information, corresponded to divergence in vaccine uptake.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The study revealed for the first time an opposing role of trust in vaccine uptake that we were able to quantify,&rdquo; said <strong>Ruben Juarez<\/strong>, economics professor in <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> (<abbr>CSS<\/abbr>) and <abbr title=\"Hawaii Medical Service Association\">HMSA<\/abbr> Endowed Professor of Health Economics at <a href=\"https:\/\/uhero.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization\">糖心视频ERO<\/abbr><\/a>. &ldquo;The levels of trust individuals expressed were highly dependent on the source of information they relied on to make decisions regarding their health.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Working in collaboration with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paac.info\/\">Pacific Alliance Against COVID-19<\/a> (<abbr>PAAC<\/abbr>), researchers surveyed 1,124 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> residents during the group\u2019s COVID-19 testing events. Of the respondents, 61.7&#37; self-identified as Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander. Researchers observed that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Respondents exhibiting a higher degree of trust in <em><strong>official<\/strong><\/em> sources of COVID-19 information were 20.68&#37; more likely to get vaccinated.<\/li>\n<li>Respondents exhibiting a higher degree of trust in <em><strong>unofficial<\/strong><\/em> sources were 12.49&#37; less likely to get vaccinated.<\/li>\n<li>Trust in unofficial sources, along with consumption of COVID-19 information from such sources, explained vaccine hesitancy, specifically among <abbr>NHPIs<\/abbr>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These findings are particularly relevant as Indigenous communities across the nation, including <abbr>NHPIs<\/abbr>, have experienced vaccine hesitancy at unprecedented levels due to historically derived sentiments of distrust in government and widespread use of social media as an information source.<\/p>\n<p>In <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, vaccine hesitancy among <abbr>NHPIs<\/abbr> is especially concerning.
