However, most peptide drugs are delivered via injection. A University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/chem\/\">Department of Chemistry<\/a> professor is joining forces with scientists from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilly.com\/\">Eli Lilly and Company<\/a>, a <em>Fortune 500<\/em> company and one of the world\u2019s largest pharmaceutical companies, to invent a way to administer peptides orally.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.hawaii.edu\/~ruisun\/index.html\"><strong>Rui Sun<\/strong><\/a> will receive a $260,000 grant for his selection to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilly.com\/partners\/research-award-program\">Lilly Research Award Program<\/a>. The delivery of peptides through food, medications, etc., is very challenging due to the harsh environment in the gastrointestinal tract, and has required complex formulations with permeation enhancers (<abbr>PEs<\/abbr>) to achieve maximum effectiveness. However, identifying useful <abbr>PEs<\/abbr> has been difficult, and there is currently no way to transfer knowledge gained from one peptide to another.<\/p>\n<p>Sun\u2019s research hopes to create that knowledge by building a molecular picture of how <abbr>PEs<\/abbr> enhance permeation of peptides. <abbr>PE<\/abbr> design would no longer be an inefficient iterative process, but rather one guided by hypothesis-driven experimentation with fewer test and learn cycles.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is an exciting opportunity to bring our collaboration to the next level and tackle this critically important issue in drug development,&rdquo; Sun said. &ldquo;And in addition to the potential breakthrough in science, it offers our students valuable experiences of working on projects with pharmaceutical applications, which leads to the next step in their career.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sun is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/05\/16\/bor-medal-for-research-2022\/\">2022 <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Regents\u2019 Medal for Excellence in Research awardee<\/a>, which recognizes a faculty member\u2019s scholarly contributions that expand the boundaries of knowledge and enrich the lives of all in the community, nation and the world.<\/p>\n<h2>Eli Lilly and Company student intern<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Christopher Kang<\/strong>, a second year <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> candidate in chemistry, will join Eli Lilly and Company as an intern this spring. Since he was an undergraduate student at <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, Kang has been working on a collaborative project on drug permeation, and this experience paved his way to internship.
