The award-winning composer, who taught at <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a>, is one of five American women to be minted on new quarters as part of the 2023 honorees for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/learn\/coin-and-medal-programs\/american-women-quarters\">American Women Quarters&#8482; Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span> worked as a teacher at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> from 1971 to 1974 and at <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo from 1974 to 1979. At both schools, she created courses and seminars on subjects including Hawaiian language, ethnobotany, Polynesian history, genealogy and Hawaiian chant and mythology.<\/p>\n<h2>Coin design<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hawaii-hilo-kanakaole-quarter-square-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Image of Edith Kanakaole on a quarter\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-174778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hawaii-hilo-kanakaole-quarter-square-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hawaii-hilo-kanakaole-quarter-square-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hawaii-hilo-kanakaole-quarter-square.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The coin depicts a portrait of <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span>, with her hair and lei <span aria-label=\"poo\">po&#699;o<\/span> (head lei) morphing into the elements of a Hawaiian landscape, symbolizing <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span>\u2019s life\u2019s work of preserving the natural land and traditional Hawaiian culture. The inscription &ldquo;E h\u014d mai ka &#699;ike&rdquo; translates as &ldquo;granting the wisdom,&rdquo; and is a reference to the intertwined role hula and chants play in this preservation.<\/p>\n<p>The other side of the coin depicts a portrait of George Washington, originally designed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser to mark his 200th birthday in 1932.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was a joy to become aware of Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span>\u2019s legacy as I developed a design for her quarter,&rdquo; said Artistic Infusion Program Designer Emily Damstra. &ldquo;I came to understand that her deep connection to the land&#8212;her home in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> near the Maunakea volcano&#8212;played a large role in her life and work. To best honor the various ways she made an impact, I felt that the design should emphasize her relationship to that environment.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Venerated cultural icon<\/h2>\n<p>Edith <span aria-label=\"Kekuhikuhipuuone\">Kekuhikuhipu&#699;uone<\/span> o n&#257; <span aria-label=\"alii\">ali&#699;i<\/span> o Kohala <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span> was an Indigenous Hawaiian composer, chanter, dancer, kumu hula and a venerated cultural icon. Her contributions extend to the work of environmental scientists, and universities that teach her philosophies and scientific methods, and position <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and the U.S. in the global conversation on climate resilience.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span>, or &ldquo;Aunty Edith,&rdquo; as she is commonly known, was a renowned practitioner of and an authority on modern Hawaiian culture and language. She believed that the oli, or Hawaiian chants, informed the basis of Hawaiian values and history. She learned this art form and performed all the major styles of delivery.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/edithkanakaolefoundation.org\/\">Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span> Foundation<\/a>, a Hawaiian cultural-based non-profit organization established in 1990, helps maintain and perpetuate her teachings, beliefs, practices, philosophies and traditions.
