A product of <a href=\"https:\/\/cds.coe.hawaii.edu\/hookui5kulia\/about\/\">Project <span aria-label=\"Hookui\">Ho&#699;oku&#699;i<\/span><\/a>, a support program for high school students developed by the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cds.coe.hawaii.edu\/\">Center on Disability Studies<\/a> (<abbr>CDS<\/abbr>), the film will premiere on Thursday, September 21, at 7 p.m. on <abbr>KHON2<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Power of <span aria-label=\"Hookui\">Ho&#699;oku&#699;i<\/span>: Joining Together to Build our Future<\/em> premieres Thursday, September 21, at 7 p.m. on <abbr>KHON2<\/abbr><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Project <span aria-label=\"Hookui\">Ho&#699;oku&#699;i<\/span> is a <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Department of Education, Native Hawaiian Education Program, grant funded project that is inclusive and supports underserved students with priority given to Native Hawaiian, Native Hawaiian gifted and talented, students with disabilities and at-risk students transitioning from high school to postsecondary education and certification programs. Currently on its fifth iteration, the program has helped nearly 2,500 high school students since it first launched in 2009. Project <span aria-label=\"Hookui\">Ho&#699;oku&#699;i<\/span> provides support services including financial aid, mentoring, tutoring and internship programs.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The documentary gives the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> community and students awareness and hope for the future and encourages them to pursue their goals and dreams through education,&rdquo; said Project <span aria-label=\"Hookui\">Ho&#699;oku&#699;i<\/span> Principal Investigator Lisa Uyehara, an associate specialist faculty with <abbr>CDS<\/abbr>. &ldquo;We can support students, but at the end of the day, it is their hard work that leads to their success and confidence building.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/05\/18\/record-number-farrington-hs-students-walk\/\">Record number of Farrington <abbr title=\"High School\">HS<\/abbr> students walk in Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> graduation<\/a>, May 18, 2023<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kea Clebsch, a student who participated in Project <span aria-label=\"Hookui\">Ho&#699;oku&#699;i<\/span>, was featured in the film, and is hopeful for viewers to see the value of place-based education and how much one opportunity can change a student\u2019s trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For me, all it took was one Hawaiian Studies class to finally see myself in education and feel that my identity had a place in my learning content,&rdquo; said Clebsch. &ldquo;It took one kumu (teacher) that created space for me to find a sense of agency in my education and realize what I have to contribute to my community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Featured <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa representatives include Jon Osorio, dean of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Hawai&#699;inui&#257;kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a>; Provost Michael Bruno; <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/ka-papa-loi-o-kanewai\/\">Ka Papa <span aria-label=\"Loi\">Lo&#699;i<\/span> o K\u0101newai Director Makahiapo Cashman; and Willy Kauai, director of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/nhss\/\">Native Hawaiian Student Services<\/a>. The leaders discussed the impact Project <span aria-label=\"Hookui\">Ho&#699;oku&#699;i<\/span> has had on the Native Hawaiian student population attending and completing college. The importance of Native Hawaiian culture and <span aria-label=\"ainabased\">&#699;&#257;ina-based<\/span> learning and its global impact will also be highlighted in the broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I believe <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> can be the beacon for the world in m\u0101lama honua (taking care of the planet),&rdquo; added Uyehara.<\/p>\n<h2>Higher education opportunities for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s youth<\/h2>\n<p>The support and opportunities Clebsch received through Project <span aria-label=\"Hookui\">Ho&#699;oku&#699;i<\/span> allowed her to forge a new path during high school and now her higher education.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hookui\">Ho&#699;oku&#699;i<\/span> created the space for me to learn about myself, experience makawalu (looking at situations in different perspectives) and develop a deepened sense of kuleana (responsibility) for the people and place I care about,&rdquo; said Clebsch. &ldquo;It was in these educational settings where I realized I could embrace a cross-pollination of art and research to solve problems that matter to me. <span aria-label=\"Hookui\">Ho&#699;oku&#699;i<\/span> allowed me to see a role in my community, and envision a future for myself grounded in a sense of place, belonging and kuleana.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a
