This work, done in partnership with the Tethys Research Institute, informs researchers\u2019 understanding of population abundance and demographics, which can improve management practices and help ensure their survival. The study was <a href=\"https:\/\/zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/acv.12978\">published in <em>Animal Conservation<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_202836\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-202836\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-mmrp-drone-release-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"two people launching drone\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-202836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-mmrp-drone-release-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-mmrp-drone-release-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-mmrp-drone-release.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-202836\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carmen Andr\u00e9s (Ionian Dolphin Project) and Vivier launching the drone in Greece.<br \/>(Photo credit: Joan Gonzalvo)<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmrphawaii.org\/\">Marine Mammal Research Program<\/a> (<abbr>MMRP<\/abbr>) researchers are comparing the drone imagery results with long-term data and data from stable, non-endangered bottlenose dolphin populations in Shark Bay, Australia, and Sarasota Bay, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In [our new] study, we highlight the speed and accuracy of UAS-photogrammetry (drone imagery) in assessing the age structure of free-ranging dolphin populations, and the implications towards management and conservation,&rdquo; said Fabien Vivier, <abbr>MMRP<\/abbr> researcher and lead author of the study. &ldquo;Our hope is that by using this method, we can quickly monitor the age-structure of free-ranging dolphin populations. This information can facilitate the detection of early signs of population changes, such as a decrease in the number of calves, and provide important insights for timely management decisions.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Healthy dolphin populations have a consistent proportion of calves, juveniles and adults; a deviation from this can suggest the population is unstable. Using drones, researchers were able to quickly quantify the age-structure of the critically endangered dolphin population in Greece in a few days.<\/p>\n<h2>Previous study classifies dolphin age<\/h2>\n<p>In a previous study, the <abbr>MMRP<\/abbr> team used specialized calibrated drones to successfully measure the length of free-swimming dolphins and classify them by age.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_202835\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-202835\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-mmrp-dolphins-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"dolphins\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-202835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-mmrp-dolphins-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-mmrp-dolphins-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/manoa-mmrp-dolphins-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-202835\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: <abbr>MMRP<\/abbr>\/IDP, Fabien Vivier)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;When dolphins come to the surface to breathe, they expose their blowhole and dorsal fin,&rdquo; said Vivier. &ldquo;By measuring the distance between the two, we can estimate their total body length. Since total length is related to age, we can estimate the age-group of a single dolphin.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Aquatic mammals known as cetaceans, which include whales, dolphins and porpoises, face a slough of threats from habitat degradation, climate change, fisheries, and chemical and noise pollution. One quarter of the 92 known cetacean species are at risk of extinction, and there is a clear and urgent need to implement effective conservation strategies.<\/p>\n<p>The project was done in collaboration with the Shark Bay Dolphin Research Project and the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program. The work in Greece was funded by the Office of Naval Research (<abbr>ONR<\/abbr>), OceanCare and the Costas M Lemos Foundation. The work in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is funded by <abbr>ONR<\/abbr>, <abbr title=\"National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\">NOAA<\/abbr> Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, the Omidyar <span aria-label=\"Ohana\">&#699;Ohana<\/span> Fund at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community Foundation and Dolphin
