However, producing these devices often requires specialized facilities and technical expertise, limiting their accessibility and widespread adoption.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/manoa-engineering-ray-sensor-manufacturing-paper-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person holding a phone and a bendable sensor\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-204285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/manoa-engineering-ray-sensor-manufacturing-paper-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/manoa-engineering-ray-sensor-manufacturing-paper-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/manoa-engineering-ray-sensor-manufacturing-paper.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The team, led by Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/rayresearchgroup.com\">Tyler Ray<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/me.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Mechanical Engineering<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/cmb.jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Cell and Molecular Biology<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>), introduced a low-cost, stencil-based method for producing sensors made from laser-induced graphene (<abbr>LIG<\/abbr>), a key material used in wearable sensing platforms.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This advancement allows us to create high-performance wearable sensors with greater precision and at a lower cost,&rdquo; said Ray. &ldquo;By using a simple metal stencil during the laser patterning process, we&#8217;ve overcome a key limitation of the traditional fabrication process, which opens up new possibilities for sensor design and functionality.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>By employing commercially available metal stencils, the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa team was able to reduce the minimum feature size from about 120 micrometers to just 45 micrometers. This allows for the creation of more complex sensor designs, such as fine-line microarray electrodes, which were previously difficult to achieve with standard laser processing.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We demonstrated the practicality of our method by fabricating temperature sensors and multi-electrode electrochemical sensors,&rdquo; Ray explained. &ldquo;These devices exhibited enhanced performance, which we attribute to the improved resolution and quality of the graphene patterns.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The study was <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.bios.2024.116649\">published in <em>Biosensors and Bioelectronics<\/em> in August 2024<\/a> as part of the journal\u2019s highlight series &ldquo;Young Scientists in the Americas.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The lead author of the study was Kaylee M. Clark, with co-authors Deylen T.
