{"id":20578,"date":"2013-10-28T16:18:41","date_gmt":"2013-10-29T02:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=20578"},"modified":"2020-07-17T15:26:38","modified_gmt":"2020-07-18T01:26:38","slug":"open-house-excites-future-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/10\/28\/open-house-excites-future-scientists\/","title":{"rendered":"Open house excites future scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7t2AF-QF-DU\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Every two years the <a href=\"www.soest.hawaii.edu\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa, opens its doors to thousands of school children and families. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> holds a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/openhouse\/index.html\">two-day long open house<\/a> that exposes kids of all ages to the wonders of science in disciplines <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M&#257;noa is internationally recognized for. The event features a wide variety of exhibits, activities and demonstrations. <\/p>\n<p>On the first day, approximately 5,300 school kids and chaperons visited the open house. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The marine stuff, they actually had all the dead fish. They had a real shark eyeball. It&#8217;s huge,&rdquo; said Joshua Leong, a 4th grader from Wilson Elementary School. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;ve seen the hands on deck where you tied a knot. And we&#8217;ve seen with the buckets where we, whoa!&rdquo; said Koa Souza, a 4th grader from <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Elementary Charter School, who was distracted by a loud bang. &ldquo;That was the volcano with eggs I think.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The noise came from a simulated volcanic eruption where 20 gallons of water and dozens of balls were blasted into the air fueled by liquid nitrogen. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/soest-openhouse.jpg\" alt=\"kids at science display\" width=\"400\" height=\"297\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-20577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/soest-openhouse.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/soest-openhouse-260x193.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The open house generated a lot of excitement. The kids also got a chance to operate a robotic submersible, make their own earthquakes and measure the impact, get up-close-and-personal with creatures of the sea and explore the surface of the moon. <\/p>\n<p>Another great aspect of the open house&#8212;visitors got the chance to talk to scientists and researchers who were eager to discuss their work and personal discoveries. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With this open house we hope that we share those new discoveries and also impart our excitement for ocean and earth sciences,&rdquo; said <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> outreach coordinator <strong>Marcie Grabowski<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>The research being done at the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology covers a wide spectrum&#8212;from weather to earthquakes to tsunamis, all of which are critically important to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and beyond. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;d like people here to know that people here are studying them, doing basic research, applied research and education&#8212;it&#8217;s what we do,&rdquo; said <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> Associate Dean of Research <strong>Alexander Shor<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Shor says <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> is one of the top schools in the world. &ldquo;To know that it&#8217;s here locally, that the expertise is here, we really would like the community to understand that,&rdquo; said Shor. <\/p>\n<p>The school hopes the event inspires children to pursue a life of science. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They showed us how to use the rocks to make stuff. I want to be a rock scientist, to see what kind of rocks there are,&rdquo; said Isabelle Kim, a 4th grader from <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Elementary Public Charter School. <\/p>\n<h2>More on the <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> open house <\/h2>\n<p><abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> celebrated 25 years of excellence and innovation in 2013. <\/p>\n<p>The popular biennial Open House featured the four <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> departments and numerous researcher units, including the <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/cmore.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education<\/a>; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">engineering<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phys.hawaii.edu\/\">physics<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phys.hawaii.edu\/\">astronomy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/marine_biology\/default.htm\">marine biology<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\">Hawaiian studies<\/a> departments; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.gov\/\">National Weather Service<\/a>; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a>; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waquarium.org\/\">Waik&#299;k&#299; Aquarium<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alohachapterhawaii.org\/\">Aloha Chapter of the American Meteorological Society<\/a>.
