State legislators from Hawaiʻi\u2019s<\/span> House of Representatives got an inside look at the exceptional resources available to students during the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> Talk Story: Student Success event on Friday, December 18. The event highlighted services that support students\u2019 academic achievements and well-being, including a center dedicated to Native Hawaiian haum\u0101na (students), high-quality mental health programs, and a sensory-friendly stress relief hub.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s incredibly meaningful to share these premier services with our lawmakers,” said 糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost Michael Bruno. “We\u2019re privileged to provide comprehensive care that supports our students\u2019 success, ensuring they have the tools and resources to thrive both academically and personally.”<\/p>\n

The tour welcomed Reps. Andrew Garrett, Amy Perruso, Jackson Sayama and Cory Chun. The event began at the Queen Liliʻuokalani<\/span> Center for Student Success, where staff from the Native Hawaiian Place of Learning Advancement Office<\/a> shared how the campus is working to reach the campus\u2019 goal of becoming a Native Hawaiian place of learning through the incorporation of ʻōlelo<\/span> Hawaiʻi<\/span> (Hawaiian language) and ʻike<\/span> (knowledge) at 糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and within each of its units.<\/p>\n

Uplifting k\u0101naka ʻōiwi<\/span> (Native Hawaiians)<\/h2>\n

Legislators visited Native Hawaiian Student Services<\/a> (NHSS<\/abbr>), a unit of the Hawaiʻinuiākea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a>. NHSS<\/abbr> offers culturally rooted programs and support to foster Hawaiian scholarship and strengthen Hawaiian identities. Lawmakers learned about its impactful role in cultivating a sense of belonging and achievement among Native Hawaiian haum\u0101na.<\/p>\n

Student success showcase<\/h2>\n

Kapā Oliveira, interim vice provost for Student Success, led the campus tour. Oliveira oversees 糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Division of Student Success<\/a>, which provides a wide range of student support services, including co-curricular activities, housing, counseling, career guidance, employment, and health services for all students.<\/p>\n

Mental health, well being<\/h2>\n

The Counseling and Student Development Center<\/a> (CSDC<\/abbr>) offers counseling, psychiatric care, and tailored programs for specific student groups, including veterans, athletes, and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander haum\u0101na. Psychologist Alexander Khaddouma emphasized the importance of expanding services, noting that 糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students experience slightly higher rates of mental health challenges than the national average.<\/p>\n

De-stress sanctuary<\/h2>\n

This on-campus sensory room provides a calming space for students and employees to manage stress and well-being.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Another standout feature of the tour was a new sensory room in Kuykendall Hall, that promotes relaxation and stress management. Equipped with calming visuals, fiber optic displays, and other sensory tools, the room has been warmly received by students and faculty. Campus surveys indicate a rising demand for such spaces to provide a sanctuary for self-regulation and focus.<\/p>\n

Representative Chun, who represents Pearl City, Waipahu, and Crestview, and is a father of two shared his impressions.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m sure it\u2019s reassuring to parents and family that if they\u2019re sick or if they\u02bbre having mental health issues that there are services that are there. You don\u02bbt have to worry about cost. They\u2019re available 24\/7,” said Chun.<\/p>\n

Academic success<\/h2>\n

The tour wrapped up with an overview of 糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s academic success services, such as academic advising, learning assistant programming, and civic and community engagement.
