The partnership provided a cross-cultural and problem-solving learning experience for both the students from Japan, as well as students from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>The week-long, rigorous <abbr>PACE<\/abbr> X Very50 collaboration encouraged students to use <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> skills to solve social and climate issues in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. Three student teams tackled:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Testing strips that indicate if sunscreens brought into <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> are reef-safe<\/li>\n<li>A card game to encourage players to create personas to reduce prejudice around houseless individuals<\/li>\n<li>An app for individuals, such as hikers, who are interested in native and endemic species<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To develop their solutions, students interviewed residents and tourists in English to gather information and insights. After her second field day of conducting interviews, Miu Nagase said, &ldquo;We were able to interview many people on topics such as homelessness and interesting things about the cultures of those we met. I noticed my growth in opening up to talking to people.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>A <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> experience<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_219455\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-219455\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/manoa-pace-very50-collab-pagniello-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"professor teaching students\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-219455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/manoa-pace-very50-collab-pagniello-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/manoa-pace-very50-collab-pagniello-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/manoa-pace-very50-collab-pagniello.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-219455\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Camille Pagniello talking about her research and the Marine Innovation Lab for Leading-edge Oceanography.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While on campus, the visiting students worked on their projects at the Walter Dods <abbr title=\"Junior\">Jr<\/abbr>., <abbr title=\"Residences for Innovative Student Entrepreneurs\">RISE<\/abbr> Center\u2019s coworking and maker spaces, and were treated to a visit and demonstration of marine bioacoustic equipment at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> Professor Camille Pagniello\u2019s Marine Innovation Lab for Leading-edge Oceanography.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> students (Kai Higuchi, art; Timothy Lum, computer science; Landon Momohara, marketing; Kensho Munakata, economics; Kaitlyn Tokunaga, accounting\/management information systems and Japanese) assisted by identifying and pointing the students to people and places to conduct interviews; and guiding the teams through prototyping tangible representations of their solutions.
