Students represented all four counties in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Participants learned directly from more than two dozen expert instructors and professionals representing agencies and organizations across the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> conservation landscape, including <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit, <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo, <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <abbr>NREM<\/abbr>, H&#257;lau <span aria-label=\"Ohia\">&#699;&#332;hi&#699;a<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Heeia\">He&#699;eia<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Ahupuaa\">Ahupua&#699;a<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Kakoo\">K&#257;ko&#699;o<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Oiwi\">&#699;&#332;iwi<\/span>, Paepae o <span aria-label=\"Heeia\">He&#699;eia<\/span> and National Estuarine Research Reserve, The Nature Conservancy, <abbr>DLNR<\/abbr> Chair\u2019s Office and the Divisions of Aquatic Resources, Forestry and Wildlife, and Conservation and Resources Enforcement, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Attorney General\u2019s Office, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Congressman Ed Case, Kupu, and <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s Lyon Arboretum, among others.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_221210\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-221210\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/system-ovpri-conservation-management-lyon-arboretum-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people sitting in a room\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-221210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/system-ovpri-conservation-management-lyon-arboretum-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/system-ovpri-conservation-management-lyon-arboretum-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/system-ovpri-conservation-management-lyon-arboretum.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-221210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Participants at Lyon Arboretum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The course covered a wide range of topics essential to conservation program leadership and management, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cohort building, <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span>-based learning and Hawaiian life pathways<\/li>\n<li>Community engagement and co-stewardship management<\/li>\n<li>Strategic planning and decision analysis<\/li>\n<li>Administrative procedure and state\/federal government functions<\/li>\n<li>Human resource management, budgeting, grant writing and management<\/li>\n<li>Public meeting facilitation, environmental law and congressional processes<\/li>\n<li>Project management, communications and leadership development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;This course was created to directly address needs expressed by statewide public and non-profit organizations working in conservation,&rdquo; said <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Director of Land and Ocean Conservation Futures Director and Course Co-instructor Suzanne Case. &ldquo;While early-career professionals often bring strong disciplinary expertise, many organizations identified a critical need for training in program administration and leadership. It looks like the course hit this need spot-on.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Co-instructor Linden Schneider reflected on the real, lasting impact, saying, &ldquo;This program not only delivered practical knowledge, but also created a powerful cohort-based learning community where participants shared their own challenges and created solutions, collaboratively, in real time.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Alan Hunley of the <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Outreach College praised the program\u2019s collaborative design.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our goal was to make this course accessible and impactful for both students and working professionals,&rdquo; Hunley said. &ldquo;We were thrilled to see the energy and dedication of the participants, and the positive feedback confirms this model is working.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Participants also expressed high praise:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&ldquo;Such a great course, filled with knowledge from many knowledgeable speakers, very informative and fun excursions to actually go to different entities and see their facilities and hear from their work experiences. I would recommend this class and take it again every five years to revitalize and remember why I love my job.&rdquo;<\/li>\n<li>&ldquo;I feel incredibly grateful for the relationships I built with the kumu, fellow students and presenters throughout this experience. The thoughtful balance between classroom learning and site visits made the program truly unique.&rdquo;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Encouraged by the pilot\u2019s success, Case and Schneider anticipate offering the course again in summer 2026 to a mix of graduate students and early-career professionals in conservation-related fields. Tuition is expected to be $1,000 for 80 hours of instruction, with applications opening in early spring 2026.
