Lincoln and his co-editors Priscilla Settee and Shailesh Shukla make the case for the urgent need to embed such lessons into the foundations of global farming and food production practices.<\/p>\n<h2>Planet before profits<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_221644\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-221644\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-ctahr-book-cover-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"book cover\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-221644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-ctahr-book-cover-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-ctahr-book-cover-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-ctahr-book-cover.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-221644\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Book cover.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lincoln, a researcher in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience<\/a>, was a contributor to the volume through the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/hawaii.edu\/ics-lab\/home\">Indigenous Cropping Systems Laboratory<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.edu\/keomaucenter\/\">Ke &#332; Mau Center for Sustainable Island Food Systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;By the measure of the <abbr title=\"United Nations\">UN<\/abbr>\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals, Indigenous societies were indeed wealthy,&rdquo; said Lincoln. &ldquo;This book highlights how many Indigenous-led efforts are putting people and planet before profits.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Two of the chapters focus on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> case studies, with contributions from Lucy Gay, Kaui Sana, Miwa Tamanaha and Lincoln. One of the chapters looks at the growth of <span aria-label=\"MAO\">MA&#699;O<\/span> Organic Farms, the largest organic vegetable producer in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Hawai&#699;i,<\/span> and its work to revitalize community food systems.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There is a lot to learn from the struggles and successes in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; said Lincoln. &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is a microcosm that can serve as a powerful model. This is the type of work we hope to promote through the new Ke &#332; Mau Center for Sustainable Island Food Systems.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Community and cooperation<\/h2>\n<p>Renowned Maori scholar Linda Tuhiwai Smith opens the book with the statement, &ldquo;I feel great urgency about what needs to be done for Indigenous food sovereignty and sustainability. The work in this book gives me some assurance that there are global networks and community-based practices that share knowledge and build support systems.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>As the global community stories illustrate, Indigenous ecological knowledge, wisdom and perspectives are central to the visions and strategies shaping sustainable food systems and planetary health\u2019s past, present and future. Western agriculture and food production has <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/11\/1143242\">many hidden health and economic costs<\/a>, leading to new thinking about agri-food system solutions with components valued in Indigenous thinking: community and cooperation, integration of people and nature, and measures of human and natural systems well-being rather than
