The study found that chemicals leaching from plastics disrupt the two most critical processes for reef survival&#8212;the reproduction of adult corals and the settling of their larvae.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The work by Keiko Wilkins, who recently earned her <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> from the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/marinebiograd\/\">Marine Biology Graduate Program<\/a>, is among the first to demonstrate these hidden dangers, which may help explain why some reefs are failing to recover after mass&#8211;bleaching events.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_222867\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222867\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-soest-coral-pollution-2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"coral eggs\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-222867\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-soest-coral-pollution-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-soest-coral-pollution-2-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-soest-coral-pollution-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-222867\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coral eggs (Photo credit: Keiko Wilkins)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;When people think of threats to coral reefs, microplastics are often unnoticed,&rdquo; said Wilkins. &ldquo;Not only do corals eat microplastics, microplastic&#8211;associated chemicals may have hidden impacts. My research highlights this issue, urging us to see plastic pollution as a complex stressor to our reefs.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Unseen threat<\/h2>\n<p>Coral reefs in <span lang\"haw\"=Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and around the world are vital ecosystems facing extreme pressure from climate change. Wilkins\u2019 work, conducted at the <a href=\"https:\/\/kml.pbrc.hawaii.edu\/\">Kewalo Marine Laboratory<\/a>, was published in two parts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/icb\/article\/64\/4\/1131\/7740778\">The first study<\/a> showed that plastic leachates&#8212;chemicals released from plastics into the water&#8212;significantly reduced fertilization rates in corals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/marine-science\/articles\/10.3389\/fmars.2025.1596594\/full\">The second study<\/a> demonstrated that these same chemicals negatively affected the ability of coral larvae to settle onto reefs, a step essential for replenishing coral populations.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Keiko\u2019s research is timely and essential in supporting efforts at the protection of coral reefs and all who depend on them,&rdquo; said Bob Richmond, director of the Kewalo Marine Laboratory and Wilkins\u2019 advisor. &ldquo;Her results provide proof of the unseen, damaging effects of plastic pollution and the need to urgently address this problem if we are to leave a legacy of vital coral reefs for future generations.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Scholarship support, real-world impact<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_222868\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222868\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-soest-coral-pollution-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person standing by tank\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-222868\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-soest-coral-pollution-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-soest-coral-pollution-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-soest-coral-pollution-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-222868\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: Mackenzie Jahnke)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wilkins conducted much of her research with support from a highly competitive <abbr title=\"National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\">NOAA<\/abbr> Nancy Foster Scholarship. This allowed her to collect coral samples in protected areas, including the Papah&#257;naumoku&#257;kea National Marine Sanctuary and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship also supported her outreach and education efforts, through which she has connected with communities and schools across American S&#257;moa to share her findings and raise awareness about the health of our oceans.
