Established by the daughters of Daniel and Lydia Makuak\u0101ne, the fellowship honors the Makuak\u0101nes\u2019 lifelong advocacy of <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;\u014dlelo<\/span> <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and Native Hawaiian cultural education.<\/p>\n<p>Lum is weaving tradition and innovation into his in-depth studies of mele (songs) of old and new. His dissertation, &ldquo;Pewa: I Ola ke Mele <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> i kona Mele &#699;ia&rdquo; (&ldquo;Pewa: The Life of Hawaiian Music in Its Song&rdquo;), braids traditional Hawaiian mele to modern soundscapes, creating bridges between younger audiences and <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;\u014dlelo<\/span> <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> (Hawaiian language) through experimental musical expression.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In my dissertation, I define mele as being &lsquo;logogenic,&rsquo; which means that words in a genre of music are more important than the musical treatment,&rdquo; Lum explained. &ldquo;And I believe that represents mele <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>; it\u2019s always the language within the text that is more important.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>With the fellowship, Lum will also have the opportunity to build on his 2023 debut album &ldquo;Pewa,&rdquo; using experimental approaches to mele <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> that promote both cultural resilience and linguistic vitality.<\/p>\n<h2>Uplifting future generations<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_223790\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223790\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hilo-makuakane-drechsel-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Makuak\u0101ne-Drechsel smiling\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-223790\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hilo-makuakane-drechsel-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hilo-makuakane-drechsel-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hilo-makuakane-drechsel.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-223790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Teresa Makuak\u0101ne-Drechsel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Our parents did not have formal educational opportunities beyond the ninth grade in Puna,&rdquo; said Teresa Makuak\u0101ne-Drechsel, a kanaka &#699;\u014diwi (Native Hawaiian) linguist and <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M\u0101noa alumna. &ldquo;Therefore, seeing this fellowship support <span lang=\"haw\">Keali&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s doctoral journey is a powerful reminder that their legacy continues to uplift future generations of <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;\u014dlelo<\/span> <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> leaders.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s College of Hawaiian Language is uniquely positioned as the only institution worldwide offering a <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> in Indigenous Language and Culture Revitalization. In 2023, it was also designated as the first National Native American Language Resource Center, further expanding its role in advancing language revitalization across the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Makuak\u0101ne family has been longstanding supporters of our college, ever since their mother (Lydia) played a big role in the movement that started the Hawaiian language revitalization,&rdquo; said <span lang=\"haw\">Ka&#699;iu<\/span> Kimura, director of Ka Haka &#699;Ula O <span lang=\"haw\">Ke&#699;elik\u014dlani<\/span>. &ldquo;It\u2019s such an honor that the family continues to work with
