Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) celebrated 79 new locally trained physicians during its 2026 Convocation Ceremony at Kennedy Theatre on May 17. The event marked a major milestone for graduates preparing to serve communities across the state and beyond.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_234523\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-234523\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-jabsom-Juyoung-chong-family-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"Chong family with Dean Shomaker on stage\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-234523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-jabsom-Juyoung-chong-family-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-jabsom-Juyoung-chong-family-130x69.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-jabsom-Juyoung-chong-family.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-234523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Juyoung Chong with her family and <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Dean Sam Shomaker.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> continues to face a physician shortage, more than half of the graduates are entering critical primary care specialties including internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony included the recitation of the Oath of Hippocrates, formally welcoming the graduates into the medical profession.<\/p>\n<h2>&lsquo;I feel so grateful&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<p>Among the graduates staying in <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> are Joseph Li and Juyoung Chong, both eager to give back to the communities they now call home.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/commencement\/\">Meet more amazing <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> graduates<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;To just be able to serve the community that I grew up in, so many people pouring in to me and my family, helping to support me to get where I am today,&rdquo; Li said. &ldquo;Couldn&#8217;t have done it without any of them, so to be able to stay in <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, and support the people of <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, is just an incredible honor and I feel so grateful to have this opportunity.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_234524\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-234524\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-jabsom-2026-convocation-oath-300x169.png\" alt=\"JABSOM students\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-234524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-jabsom-2026-convocation-oath-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-jabsom-2026-convocation-oath-130x73.png 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/manoa-jabsom-2026-convocation-oath.png 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-234524\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">JABSOM graduates recite the Oath of Hippocrates.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Chong, who was born and raised in Busan, South Korea, said <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> became his second home after moving to the islands for high school.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is just the perfect environment for me because I was able to start my family, have a child, and with the <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ohana<\/span> and aloha and all the love that I may not be able to have outside of <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo;
