The first is a call to anyone working with coffee plants to help track and stop the spread of a previously unseen virus threatening the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> coffee crop. The second is a crowdsourcing campaign for an educational pavilion in the popular Waim&#257;nalo Research Station.<\/p>\n<h2>Calling all citizen scientists<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23636\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23636\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/emaravirus-infected-leaf.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/emaravirus-infected-leaf.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/emaravirus-infected-leaf-260x173.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23636\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coffee leaf with symptomatic lesions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A new virus first discovered on the Big Island in January 2014 creates lesions on the leaves and petioles of coffee plants and reportedly renders the cherries unmarketable. The virus was first identified through <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> plant pathologist Scot Nelson&#8217;s app <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiiplantdisease.net\/%22The-Plant-Doctor%22-app-for-Android-and-iPhones.php\">Plant Doctor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson is asking growers to report symptoms of the disease on their plants so the geographic distribution of the virus can be determined. Recent fundraising efforts have earned enough to build the base and columns of a new Learning Pavilion but not enough for the most important part, the roof. Enter, crowdsourcing. <\/p>\n<p>Crowdsourcing is a method of grassroots fundraising in which individuals, non-profits and many other groups set up campaigns to raise money on websites. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/projects\/hawai-i-on-farm-learning-pavilion\">The Learning Pavilion campaign on Indiegogo<\/a> gives people a way to help for as little as $25 and runs through May
