Participants gained practical experience by constructing a new classroom and office space, a project designed to resolve the shortage of secure instructional areas at the facility.<\/p>\n<p>For student Stephen Spigner, who is nearing his release, the program served as a critical turning point.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It seems sort of like a miracle,&rdquo; Spigner said. &ldquo;It&#8217;s really divine timing that this program is being offered while I&#8217;m here.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h3>Laying the foundation<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_238661\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-238661\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Kauai-carpentry-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"carpentry students \" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-238661\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Kauai-carpentry-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Kauai-carpentry-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Kauai-carpentry-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-238661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kaua&#699;i <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Carpentry Instructor Duke Lang with a <abbr>KCCC<\/abbr> student.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Upon completing the microcredential, students earn credit for foundational coursework. This allows them to bypass introductory classes if they enroll in the college\u2019s associate in applied science in carpentry program after their release.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&#8217;re hoping to give them a different opportunity when they get out from doing their time here,&rdquo; Lang said. &ldquo;The feedback they&#8217;re giving me is, &lsquo;Wow, I can really see how this can be useful. When I get out, I think I&#8217;m going to come see you.&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"haw\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Chancellor Margaret Sanchez said the lack of a secure space for classes at <abbr>KCCC<\/abbr> has been a hurdle, but with the completion of the classroom, the partnership can continue to grow.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The students are learning hands-on to provide a classroom space to increase future educational opportunities at <abbr>KCCC<\/abbr>,&rdquo; Sanchez said.<\/p>\n<h3>&lsquo;Knowledge is power&rsquo;<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_238662\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-238662\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Kauai-carpentry-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"carpentry student\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-238662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Kauai-carpentry-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Kauai-carpentry-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Kauai-carpentry-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-238662\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>KCCC<\/abbr> students are working towards a carpentry degree before release.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The initiative is building bridges to long-term stability.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The students are engaged,&rdquo; said <abbr>KCCC<\/abbr> Educational Specialist Darcy Yamamoto. &ldquo;They&#8217;re asking questions. They are diligent about coming to class.
