Rather than adding carbon atoms one at a time, the process allows several new chemical bonds to form in a single step, speeding up the growth of larger molecules.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manoa-chemistry-complex-molecules-in-space2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"complex molecule in space\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-239718\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manoa-chemistry-complex-molecules-in-space2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manoa-chemistry-complex-molecules-in-space2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manoa-chemistry-complex-molecules-in-space2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The team demonstrated the process in laboratory experiments that recreated the extremely high temperatures found around aging stars and other energetic environments in space. The reactions produced several large <abbr>PAHs<\/abbr> that had been predicted, but were difficult to explain using older models.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery could improve scientists\u2019 understanding of how carbon evolves in the universe and how increasingly complex molecules are created. Those molecules are believed to play an important role in the chemistry of stars, planets and the material that eventually forms solar systems.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This discovery changes how we think these large carbon molecules are built,&rdquo; said Professor Ralf I. Kaiser. &ldquo;For years, we knew they existed in enormous numbers throughout space, but we couldn\u2019t explain how nature produced them so efficiently. We\u2019ve now identified a much faster pathway that helps connect the smallest carbon molecules to the complex structures found across the universe.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The research was led by <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> <span lang=\"haw\">M&#257;noa<\/span> in collaboration with researchers in Taiwan (Agnes Chang) and the synchrotron facility SOLEIL in France (Laurent
