A new book by University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at Hilo Associate Professor of English Patsy Iwasaki explores how documentary filmmaking can support research, education and storytelling.<\/p>\n

Gathering the Story: Designing Education Through the Documentary Lens<\/em> focuses on the research and information-gathering that happens before filming begins.<\/p>\n

“Every documentary begins long before the camera starts rolling\u2014with the research that shapes the story,” Iwasaki said.<\/p>\n

Bringing Hawaiʻi<\/span> history to life<\/h2>\n

Iwasaki has already used that kind of research-driven storytelling to bring Hawaiʻi<\/span> history to a wider audience. She is the author of H\u0101m\u0101kua Hero: A True Plantation Story<\/em><\/a>, a graphic novel about Katsu Goto, a Japanese immigrant who worked on a H\u0101m\u0101kua sugar plantation before becoming a Honokaʻa<\/span> storekeeper and advocate for plantation workers. Goto was lynched in 1889 at age 27. Iwasaki is also producing a documentary about his life.<\/p>\n
