This group of graduates is made up of 10 women and 5 men, who range in age from 18 to 74. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30091\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/ican.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"224\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30091\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/ican.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/ican-260x145.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fifteen students celebrate graduation from the Individualized Career Achievement Network or iCAN program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div style=\"float:right;margin:0 0 15px 15px;\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YcCzQtM6zx0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong>Related <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> News video<\/strong>: iCAN prepares students for college and<br \/> careers, February 5, 2012 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/02\/05\/ican-prepares-students-for-college-and-careers\/\">(Read full story)<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>&ldquo;I am from Micronesia,&rdquo; said iCAN graduate <strong>Julie Johannes<\/strong>. &ldquo;And I am a wife, mother and grandma.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I recently came out of jail in February and ever since then, I just been on a straight path, just trying to change my life,&#8221; said fellow iCAN graduate <strong>Nathan Paoa<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>iCAN&#8217;s mission is to help participants improve their lives by finding career pathways, whether that&#8217;s college or some type of workforce training. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We realize that students don&#8217;t have the basic skills that sometimes they need to get into those career pathways or to find the jobs that they are looking for,&rdquo; said <strong>Roya Dennis<\/strong>, the <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College iCAN coordinator. <\/p>\n<p>The 135-hour program focuses on career skills like teamwork and communication along with reading, writing, math, computer skills and a broad range of support services. <\/p>\n<p>The students also tour college campuses. The iCAN program is a gateway to the world of possibility&#8212;a bridge to higher education or a fulfilling career. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I learned that I can be myself and what I want to do for my goal, I can do it,&rdquo; said Johannes. &ldquo;That&#8217;s iCAN program.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcsahawaii.org\/\">McKinley Community School for Adults<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waipahucs.k12.hi.us\/\">Waipahu Community School for Adults<\/a> are piloting the iCAN program in a partnership between the <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community Colleges<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/TeachingAndLearning\/AdultEducation\/Pages\/Home.aspx\">Department of Education Community School for Adults<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/c3t\/\">Community College Career Training program<\/a> funded by a $24.6 million grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doleta.gov\/\">U.S. Department of Labor&#8217;s Employment and Training Administration<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>At every iCAN graduation ceremony, each student gives a presentation on their career goals and how they will accomplish those goals. A big part of iCAN is to leave with a detailed plan. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Well right now, I&#8217;m not sure what I want to do,&rdquo; said Paoa. &ldquo;That&#8217;s why on my presentation I had like three different things. But I know that whatever I do choose, it&#8217;s going to be worth it.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The iCAN program is available every spring, summer and fall. <\/p>\n<p>Graduates receive a National Career Readiness Certificate and a Certificate of Professional Development. They also have an option to earn a Healthcare Foundation certificate by taking an additional 30-hour course that covers the skills needed for entry-level positions in the healthcare industry. <\/p>\n<p>Just like any graduation ceremony, there are a lot of laughter, tears, hugs and one last group shot. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Now we&#8217;re done and I just go on, I want to continue on,&rdquo; said Johannes right after she graduated. &ldquo;So never be scared.
