Burns School of Medicine<\/a> and <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Pharmacy<\/a> demonstrates for the first time that stretching of cardiac cells in cardiac hypertrophy promotes secretion of a protein that helps protect cardiac function and keep cardiac cells alive. <\/p>\n<p>Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, or <abbr>VEGF<\/abbr>, normally creates new blood vessels during embryonic development and promotes vessel development following injury or lack of oxygen. In a study using rats, Assistant Professor of Molecular Biology <strong>Michelle Matter<\/strong> and her colleagues found that when enlargement of the heart stretches cardiac cells, they release <abbr title=\"Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor\">VEGF<\/abbr>. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have found that stretch of adult cardiac cells promotes release of <abbr>VEGF<\/abbr> through activation of the <abbr>NFkB<\/abbr> signaling pathway,&rdquo; Matter said. Blocking <abbr>NFkB<\/abbr> activation abrogates <abbr>VEGF<\/abbr> secretion induced by cyclic mechanical stretch in these cells. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Targeting this molecular pathway may alleviate the pathological effects of hypertrophy and increase survival of patients who have had a heart attack or suffer hypertension,&rdquo; Matter said.<\/p>\n<h2>Heart disease in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>More than 3,100 people in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> die of cardiovascular disease each year, according to The Burden of Heart Disease in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, a report to the state Department of Health.<\/p>\n<p>As many as 70 percent of the adults in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> have at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease, including diabetes, hypertension and obesity, and Big Island residents, Native Hawaiians, Filipinos and the poor have higher risks for cardiovascular disease, according the <abbr title=\"Department of Health\">DOH<\/abbr> report.<\/p>\n<h2>About the study<\/h2>\n<p>Study co-authors are <strong>Anna Leychenko<\/strong> and <strong>Mayumi Jijiwa<\/strong> of the <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Department of Cell and Molecular Biology and <strong>Eugene Konorev<\/strong> of the <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo College of Pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>The research was funded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/nih.gov\/\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>&#8217;s National Center for Research Resources and the results published online in the journal <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/home.action;jsessionid=F4C7E2CF5F378F0D41C31A244EEE0E03\">PLoS ONE<\/a><\/em> during December 2011.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/article\/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0029055\" \">Read the article in <em>PLoS ONE<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new study by M&#257;noa researchers identifies a molecular pathway that may help reduce the damaging effects of an enlarged heart.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[30],"tags":[52,165,31,14,9],"class_list":["post-3145","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-research","tag-college-of-pharmacy","tag-health","tag-john-a-burns-school-of-medicine","tag-uh-hilo","tag-uh-manoa","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"aioseo_head":"\n\t\t<!-- All in One SEO 4.9.9 -
