The University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at Mānoa’s Center for Teaching Excellence offers mid-semester teaching assessment services. Small group instructional diagnosis and the pencil and paper assessments are conducted from Monday, February 27 through Friday, March 23, 2012.<\/p>\n

Teaching assessment services function on a request only basis and are confidential. Only the faculty member or teaching assistant may make the request and documents produced are sent only to them. Read more about CTE<\/abbr>’s philosophy, and approach to evaluation services.<\/p>\n

Types of Mid-Semester Assessment Services<\/h2>\n

Small group instructional diagnosis<\/strong><\/p>\n

A CTE<\/abbr> consultant visits a class for 50–75 minutes without the instructor present and asks students three questions—what has helped them learn, what has made learning difficult, and what suggestions do they have for change. Small groups of students discuss and answer these questions. The consultant meets with the instructor and passes on this information. Availability: October and March.<\/p>\n

Classroom observation<\/strong><\/p>\n

A CTE<\/abbr> consultant visits a class session to observe the teaching process and conduct a peer review. A follow-up session is scheduled with the CTE<\/abbr> consultant to discuss the observations and recommendations. Availability: All year round.<\/p>\n

Paper and pencil assessment<\/strong><\/p>\n

CTE<\/abbr> provides a master copy of comment forms with the above three Small Group questions. These are distributed to the class and students anonymously provide a written answer. The instructor reviews the forms for key comments or student consensus. A follow-up consultation with CTE<\/abbr> can be scheduled. Availability: October and March.<\/p>\n
