One answer, is architecture.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our entire lives, on other worlds, are going to be contained within the buildings we make while we&#8217;re there or bring with us,&rdquo; explains <strong>Tristan Bassingthwaighte<\/strong>, a crewmember on a year-long, <a href=\"http:\/\/hi-seas.org\/\"><abbr title=\"Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation\">HI-SEAS<\/abbr> Mars simulation mission<\/a> on the island of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\">NASA<\/a>-funded mission is run by the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a>, where Bassingthwaighte is also a graduate student studying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arch.hawaii.edu\/\">architecture<\/a> for extreme environments.<\/p>\n<p>The harsh conditions on the lava fields that flank Mauna Loa&#8212;with the exception of the human-friendly atmosphere&#8212;are not so different than Mars, which is home to the largest volcano in our solar system.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;So I&#8217;m doing my doctorate while I&#8217;m up here, living in fields of lava while trying to design structures for other people to live in other fields of lava someday,&rdquo; says Bassingthwaighte.<\/p>\n<p>But what form those structures should take remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Underground, in a dome, in a printed ice dome, in a <abbr title=\"three dimension\">3D<\/abbr> printed structure, in a tin can,&rdquo; he explains. &ldquo;If you&#8217;re going to go there for two weeks to try and explore, you&#8217;re probably going to have a little mothership up above with maybe one or two inflatable modules and a little tin can lander on the ground.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div style=\"float:right;margin:0 0 15px 15px;\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oBJlQnl3sYI?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong>Related 糖心视频 News video<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/08\/31\/year-long-hi-seas-space-simulation-mission-underway\/\"><em>Year-long HI-SEAS space<br \/> simulation mission underway<\/em>,<\/a> August 31, 2015 \n<\/div>\n<p>A longer stay would require different designs.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You&#8217;re going to want a lot more space and capability, and so you&#8217;ll probably be either building structures on the ground or building an inflatable module and hiding in a cave or covering it with regolith, just to protect yourself from the radiation,&rdquo; adds Bassingthwaighte. &ldquo;You want to be able to include nature, you want to have the room to move, spaces that don&#8217;t feel like they&#8217;re confining you all the time.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> mission has allowed Bassingthwaighte an extraordinary opportunity to take his classroom learning at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> M&#257;noa into the field.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s very, very cool to be able to have studied extreme architecture, to have begun designing things for buildings on the moon, or Mars or the Antarctic, and then actually get to come here to live in this same environment that I would if I were building these things for real,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;That&#8217;s super awesome.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47487\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47487\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/manoa-hiseas-bassingthwaighte-drawing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" class=\"size-full wp-image-47487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/manoa-hiseas-bassingthwaighte-drawing.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/manoa-hiseas-bassingthwaighte-drawing-260x146.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47487\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bassingthwaighte sketching a concept for an inhabited lava tube<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How will humans be able to both survive and thrive on places like Mars?
