The Natural Science Department at Kauaʻi<\/span> Community College<\/a> hosted a viewing of the transit of Venus earlier this month as a service-learning project at Russian Fort Elizabeth in Waimea.<\/p>\n

The public was invited, including high school students from Kapaʻa<\/span> High School, Waimea High School, Kawaikini Charter School and Island School.<\/p>\n

Kauaʻi<\/span> Community College provided all equipment necessary for the safe observation of the event, including a new state-of-the-art, computer-controlled telescope that was employed to produce photographs and the best possible view for those who attended.<\/p>\n

Four students—Haley Adamic<\/strong>, Chloe Stokes<\/strong>, Jin-Wah Lau<\/strong> and Travis Manning<\/strong>—also presented information about the transit and pointed out the importance of historical transits for the understanding and calculation of the size of the solar system.<\/p>\n
