Photo by Erin Datlof.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A graduate student at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> is taking part in an ambitious worldwide project headed by the Smithsonian. The goal of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ggi.si.edu\/\">Global Genome Initiative<\/a> is to collect at least one species from half of the genera (estimated 160,000&#8211;200,000) on Earth by 2020. In support of the expansive project, the Smithsonian has provided funding for <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo graduate student <strong>Jeffery Stallman<\/strong> to take the lead on gathering tissue samples and analyzing the <abbr title=\"deoxyribonucleic acid\">DNA<\/abbr> from all native plants in the Aster (daisy) family found on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;By analyzing the <abbr>DNA<\/abbr> sequences from these samples, and additional <abbr>DNA<\/abbr> sequences available from prior studies, Stallman is determining if the current best methods of identifying species based on <abbr>DNA<\/abbr> are effective in differentiating closely related Hawaiian plants, which can be critically important in identifying threatened or endangered species when key identifying features, such as flowers, are not present,&rdquo; says <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/directory\/view\/1897\">Matthew Knope<\/a><\/strong>, assistant professor of biology at <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo and one of Stallman&#8217;s advisors on the project.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/hilo-student-jeffery-stallman.jpg\" alt=\"Jeffery Stallman\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-75449\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/matthew-knope.squarespace.com\/\">Knope Evolutionary Ecology Lab<\/a>, housed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/biology\/\">Department of Biology<\/a> at <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo, is where the genetic research is being conducted. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/directory\/view\/993\">Jonathan Price<\/a><\/strong>, associate professor and chair of geography is collaborating and assisting with locating specimens in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Stallman is a graduate student in <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/ms_tcbes\">Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science program<\/a>, where he studies fungal taxonomy and conservation genetics of Hawaiian plants. He is working on his master&#8217;s thesis on Hawaiian fungi with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/directory\/view\/138\">Don Hemmes<\/a><\/strong>, professor emeritus in biology and a renowned expert in mushrooms, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/directory\/view\/354\">Mike Shintaku<\/a><\/strong>, a professor of plant pathology. He&#8217;s working with Knope and Price on native Hawaiian plant conservation genetics.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are looking forward to helping [the Smithsonian] towards their goal, while learning how to make quality museum vouchers of plant species, seeing a slice of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s unique flora, exploring the island, and hopefully answering some of our own conservation and evolutionary questions about Hawaiian plants along the way,&rdquo; says Stallman in <a href=\"http:\/\/matthew-knope.squarespace.com\/blog\/2017\/3\/11\/collecting-for-the-smithsonians-global-genome-initiative-ggi-on-hawaii-island-began-last-week-1\">a blog post about the project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stallman will be presenting his preliminary results at a graduate symposium sponsored by the Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science program, April 5 and 6 at the <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Hilo Campus Center. He will be the first author on the resulting publication.<\/p>\n<p>Collaborating agencies are the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Division of Forestry and Wildlife, the National Park Service, the Natural Area Reserve System, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, P\u014dhakuloa Training Area Natural Resources Office, the Plant Extinction Prevention Program and the Smithsonian Institution
