(Photo credit: Leah Bremer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Landowners across the state face decisions about the future of pasturelands, including the right mix of continued pasture, forest restoration and other land-use options like coffee or restoring to agroforestry (a once prominent land use in the region). <\/p>\n<p>A growing body of research is being developed on the ways that land-use choices influence societal well-being. Huge strides have been made to quantify and include multiple values of land into decision-making. Yet, much of this research remains siloed among those that focus solely on the biophysical aspects, monetary value or broader social and cultural values. This division precludes different types of values being considered simultaneously by decision-makers in a meaningful way.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past four years a National Science Foundation Coastal Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/biocultural\/linking-local-ecological-knowledge-ecosystem-services-and-community-resilience-to-environmental-and-climate-change-in-pacific-islands\/\">(<abbr title=\"National Science Foundation\">NSF<\/abbr> Coastal <abbr>SEES<\/abbr>) project<\/a>, led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.botany.hawaii.edu\/people\/tamara-ticktin\/\"><strong>Tamara Ticktin<\/strong><\/a> of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.botany.hawaii.edu\/\">botany department<\/a>, gathered a transdisciplinary team of researchers across the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, including the <abbr>糖心视频<\/abbr> Economic Research Organization (<abbr title=\"University of  Hawaii Economic Research Organization\">糖心视频ERO<\/abbr>), geography, natural resources and environmental management (<abbr title=\"natural resources and environmental management\">NREM<\/abbr>), marine biology and elsewhere who have worked closely with conservation organizations, landowners and communities in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> to bridge this divide<\/a>. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/uhero.hawaii.edu\/news\/view\/325\">Read the <abbr title=\"University of  Hawaii Economic Research Organization\">糖心视频ERO<\/abbr> story for more on this collaboration<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A recent article, &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecologyandsociety.org\/vol23\/iss1\/art33\/\">Bringing multiple values to the table: an assessment of future land-use and climate change in North Kona, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/a>,&rdquo; published in the <em>Journal Ecology and Society<\/em>, describes a collaborative approach to assessing the multiple values that different ecosystems in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/a> provide and how collaboration with stakeholders, in this case Kamehameha Schools and the <span aria-label=\"Kaupulehu\">Ka&#699;\u016bp\u016blehu<\/span> community, can help evaluate and compare the potential future uses of pastureland. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77703\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77703\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/manoa-natural-sciences-kaupulehu-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-77703\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/manoa-natural-sciences-kaupulehu-1.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/manoa-natural-sciences-kaupulehu-1-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-77703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dry forest restoration project in <span aria-label=\"Kaupulehu\">Ka&#699;\u016bp\u016blehu<\/span>. (Photo credit: Leah Bremer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Seeing natural regeneration of endemic dry forest plants is rare in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, but keiki plants are plentiful in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiiforest.org\/index.php\/article\/kaupulehu_restoration_project\"><span aria-label=\"Kaupulehu\">Ka&#699;\u016bp\u016blehu<\/span> dry forest restoration project<\/a> in North Kona on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island, a successful community-based effort to restore one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world. Many of the community members who work there are from cattle ranching families. They see tremendous value in mixed-use landscapes including native forest and pasturelands, but worry about encroaching urban development. <\/p>\n<p>The paper was led by <strong>Leah Bremer<\/strong> of <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization\">糖心视频ERO<\/abbr> and the Water Resources Research Center, Lisa Mandle of the Natural Capital Project at Stanford University, Clay Trauernicht and <span aria-label=\"Puaala\">Pua&#699;ala<\/span> Pascua of <abbr>NREM<\/abbr>, <strong>Kimberly Burnett<\/strong> and <strong>Christopher Wada<\/strong> of <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization\">糖心视频ERO<\/abbr>, <strong>Tamara Ticktin<\/strong>, <strong>Shimona Quazi<\/strong>, <strong>Natalie Kurashima<\/strong> and <strong>Heather McMillen<\/strong> in botany, and <strong>Thomas Giambelluca<\/strong> of geography.
